Firstly let me say, I agree with you and I think most people do know about the treatment of caged hens and dont like it but the price of free range eggs is too much for a lot of people so the ones at fault are whoever makes up these prices farmers, supermarkets or whoever it is.
If the farmers get a similar price for these eggs as they do for the birds, it is very little indeed. I think the crux of this matter is are we entitled to cause suffering to animals just so that we can have cheap food. I haven`t got any figures to support this, but I think that years ago people spent a higher percentage of their income on food, and some foods were a luxury.

To keep hens and let them roam, feed them decently and care for their welfare probably isn`t cheap. I believe the manure is good for gardens though.

Thankyou Bilberry Charlotte that was quick ! I love anything quick and easy to make for days when Im too tired to cook.

Obviously I'll use the vegan parmesan lol
I just happen to have a little time to idle away, so I was online. We haven`t made this recently because of the cheese, I thought we might try the cheezly as we haven`t found anywhere local that sells vegan parmesan. Enjoy.

That part that caused me 'offence' BabyMother was how you said about how people should pay more money for good quality meat! To me at least that is not an option as I don’t think any meat or by product consumption is a good thing as it quite literally is murder. Also replacing things aren’t exactly the healthiest way of going about being vegetarian or vegan as it is (not that what they replace are healthy as it is!) but being vegan does change your taste to foods. I didn‘t like soya milk when I first went vegan but I can go through loads of it now. I agree there are many different available ways a vegan can obtain iron but there again twinkle_star did state quite a few as it was and as she basically said it is highly unlikely that a person is eating a diet of pure spinach!

My partner eats meat and rather likes a lot of the products I eat. He knows the only reason he isn’t vegan is because he likes the taste of meat and of the by products and admits it’s very selfish of him. I’m sure if he could get over the taste aspect he would be vegan but he needs to do it on his own. He knows the information and admits he’s wrong so the step isn’t far off it just needs to happen to him naturally if indeed it does. He thinks the only good source of animals for meat is hunting it yourself as you only kill what you need like any other animal that eats meat does in nature! I have to admit that if people are going to eat it that is the right way to think. However even then it isn’t sustainable but it has more of a chance to be for the world. Animals for food are just not a sustainable food or sustainable for the earth.

Suppermarkets and health food shops usually sell vegan parmesan (the sprinkely type not a block). I can't tell that it isn't dairy paremesan but it has been a very long time since I had the dairy stuff! :)

edit: the suppermarkets will have it in their free from section.

That is helpful, thank you. I will ask my daughter to see if she can find some, not sure how well off this area is for health food shops though, and I have looked on Asda, Waitrose & Ocado, but can`t find anything in the way of vegan `cheese`.

She got the cheezly from Morrisons, but couldn`t see any other types. I was thinking of ordering from Redwood`s site.

  • I am not a vegan but I have a good friend who is and I want to buy her some kind of chocolate egg for Easter. I know that Green and Blacks do vegan chocolate and there are others, but she really really loves Cadburys creme eggs, which are obviously not suitable for her any more and I want to try and get her some kind of small creme egg type thing. I saw some Lindt Lindor dark (60%) chocolate creme egg style eggs in Tesco but couldn't find anything on them to say if they were suitable for vegans - does anyone know if they are suitable or, if they aren't, does anyone know of any other creme egg style little eggs which I could get for her. Also, are Raspberry Ruffle bars vegan?

  • I don't think the link dark cream egg type eggs are suitable (have a vageue memory of checking the ingredients), but lint do little dark choc eggs in foil (the type where you get a bag of lots of little ones) that are suitable. Not sure about raspberry ruffle bars, havn't heard of them before. :)

Thanks for that suep, I have just been online again but they don`t seem to have it for home delivery, I will ask my daughter to check out the `free from` aisle. :-)

Hey guys, been lovely to read through some great posts and it feels like ages again since I've been on here!

suep re: Brighton I'll have to ask My Vegan Friend about health food shops as I really don't know it very well down there. Leave it with me.

Swedish Glace: Definately in Sainsbury's and in Tesco - I haven't bought one for a few weeks, instead treat has been Divine choc that was cheaper than Sainsbury's own.

Am really looking forward to Easter, my sis has been looking a vegan choc websites so hopefully I'm in for a treat or two.....

Can I also have confirmation that Tesco hot cross buns are vegan? Want to buy some for the office on Thursday!!

sparklewing I think the fact that you came on here and said about your brief foray into non-veganism shows how much you care and how much effort you're putting into veganism - to make you feel the way you did, then you've come a long way (hope that doesn't sound patronising!!). I've said on here before how cheese has nearly called to me, and everyone's right - there's no vegan police officer looking over your shoulder and in years you won't even remember doing it.

I can't remember who said they suffer IBS too but I dug out an old info sheet which gives a really good easy to follow chart of when to eat what on an empty stomach, based on soluble fibre and insoluble. I can't believe I let it out of my sight as it gives such obvious advice (things like carrots and potatatoes are cool to eat first, but something like berries and greens should be eaten later in a meal, or with something like oats). I'll post it on here when I get a mo.

It's a tight month £££ this month  am trying to keep food shop under £150 for two of us. That's going to sound excessive to some (probably all of you). I tried to spend £25 or less on Saturday in Mr. S and ended up spending double (blasted liquitabs and fabric conditioner that I don't want to buy when move into own home not helping). Am really noticing how OH's meat habits make a difference (£2+ on bacon, £4 on chicken breast, £2.40 on turkey things). But I did treat myself to Redwoods fake ham and some Cheezly in H&B. Sigh, when is Pure bringing out it's range?!?!) I put them between some bread (a sandwich of sorts) 30 secs in the microwave and it jazzed it up a bit.

I honestly think shopping around is the answer, and I need my own freezer to make more batches of things. I think I'll spend less in the future (after all, that's the aim of this website, no less, to get people like me to spend more wisely!!).

I mentioned a while ago that I was losing the will to cook, but renewed my enthusiasm yesterday with a couple of Sarah Kramer recipes, with some adaptation. One was carrot soup which I enhanced with some red quinoa and the other a vege curry (in which I slung in some frozen chickpeas - one bag down, 10 to go!!). Will again post asap.

Anyone going to the Veggie Show on the 18th? I don't think I can make it but am going to try.
    :D
