Going vegan......old style?!

Another good place is food co-ops - I heard about Unicorn in Chorlton (Manchester) and went to have a look the other week - it's 100% vegan but I don't think they had a lot of meat-substitutes (actually, I may be wrong because I wasn't looking for that sort of thing) - what they seem really good and cheap for is things like flour, pulses, dried fruits, nuts, sugar-free things (I don't eat sugar or artificial sweeteners so I got very excited about the biscuits and fizzy drinks...). I bought quite a lot of organic fruit and veg and it's lasted really well so it must have been very fresh to start with. I bought some Williams pears and they were the best I've ever eaten in my life - I was so looking forward to the last one and OH ate it  He didn't even enjoy it because he like pears to be hard as rocks and this one was juicy and perfect.... Is pear-theft grounds for divorce?
Anyway, I don't work for Unicorn, I promise, but it's worth a look if you're in the area. According to the website they make a point of offering employment to people with learning disabilities, so that makes them worth supporting, IMHO.0 -
hi,
due to earlier discussions about raw food, i have decided to give it a try and add some in this week, just for 2 meals a day and 1 cooked meal for dinner. Im doing it to see if it makes any difference to my m.e and ibs.
I just wanted to say that its amazing how different the vegetable taste raw. I havent experimented to much yet, but i had courgette yesterday, and that is the first time i have ever liked it!
todays lunch was sesame seeds, tahini, honey, carrots, cauli, brocolli, and celery. Yes it does take some chewing, but surprising how it fills you up! No different than eating a salad for lunch, and possibly cheaper, depending on whats on offer!
Thanks to doom and gloom for your advice!
so if your looking for something different for lunch, make a big pot of vege's up, cut thinly with a potato peeler! i know honey isnt vegan, so you would have to use an alternative in the tahini dressing!0 -
Today I made 'notchicken noodle' soup for lunch. very cheap and very tasty. Put 2 pints of boiling water in a pan with vegetable stock (I used Kallo I think....) brought back to the boil and added half a pack of rice noodles and about half a pack of frozen sweetcorn and cooked for a few minutes until the noodles were soft. It's delicious and makes about 4 bowls maybe more.0

I'm not vegan (yet) having only become vegetarian about a year ago but I've been following this thread with interest. And tho I haven't had time to try any of the recipies yet everything sounds really good and makes me hungry.sparklewing wrote: »Today I made 'notchicken noodle' soup for lunch. very cheap and very tasty. Do you freeze these extra portions. Cos I was thinking about making a big batch and freezing tonight but would the noodles disintegrate?
Many thanks for your help0 -

Never made it before so not sure. I'm going to try freezing it though.0 -
For anyone intending to attend the forthcoming Incredible Veggie Show in Victoria on 18 April, you can currently get £1 off the entry ticket by booking online (ie £3 instead of £4; under 18s go free). Lots of freebies & other bargains on the day, plus it's going to be 100% vegan :j
And if anyone wants to help publicise this not-for-profit event, you can ask for some free flyers & posters to display at your local healthfood store, veggie-friendly eatery, library, school etc.0 -
I'm not a vegan too but I hope it's ok to lurk and post here. We do eat vegetarian and vegan meals in between the meaty ones as a way of pleasing everyone. Anyway, I found a recipe that I used to make in an old notebook and I wondered if it might help
Provencal Bean Casserole
1 large onion, peeled and chopped
2 cloves garlic
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 carrots, peeled and sliced
1 x 14 oz can tomatoes and herbs
good glass of red wine
1 x 14 oz can chickpeas
1 x 14 oz can kidney beans
2 dessertspoons of soy sauce
1 teaspoon salt (actually, I season at the end)
flour to thicken
3 oz pitted black olives
Saute onion and garlic until brown
Add carrot and colour
Drain beans
Add all other ingredients, apart from flour and olives
Simmer until tender
Season, thicken and add olives. Simmer 5 mins more0 -
Patchwork Quilt that sounds like a very nice vegan recipe. The only thing a vegan would have to be very careful with in it is the red wine as not all wines are vegan. Most soya sauces you can buy should be vegan although some contain lactic acid and unless you know for sure it's not from a dairy source it's best to aviod those kinds.I am a vegan woman. My OH is a lovely omni guy0

Ive been trying to find Astonish household products everywhere, as they are so cheap compared to other vegan friendly products and I found the web site last night, thought Id post it here as it might help someone.

I had a good look through the parsley soup website the other day and came across a recipe for peanut butter cookies! They used to bake them in a museum cafe I once worked in and I LOVED them so immediately went off to bake a batch. They are now all gone, my OH only managed to eat 2 or 3 and I scoffed the lot, they were delicious!
I have another batch in the oven now, will try not to be quite so greedy this time!
Hmm, tried to post a link to the recipe but it won't let me0
