I love tempeh too but find it hard to get hold of it. A friend used to make it himself and would give it to me, but alas no more!
I've got some yummy puddings made using silken tofu. I'll dig them out if you're interested.0 -
Hi guys so far eating out hasn't been too much of a problem for me but then i do live in Manchester and as well as tons of deli's etc there is also several veggie restaurants & cafes which do a great selection of vegan.

thankyou lovely twink for our vegan cardiff weekend - glad you enjoyed the cake! anyone who hasn't tried tofu scramble yet, give it a go! I acted 2nd chef and we had it on toast with a layer of spinach which was great. I'm going to try a layer of fried tomato when I can find tofu in Truro - anyone?. Sainsburys used to stock it I think but not now. Holland and Barratt had none  and our brilliant veggie/vegan shop, Carley's, closed for 'refurb?' and has never reopened for some reason
Anyway, Wagamamas had quite a few vegan choices - and no mile-long queue, but grrrr to the tea room at St Fagan's which had NOTHING twink could eat (good job she had her sneaky supply of Rich Tea, nuts and raisins). Having said that, she had baked potato and beans in one of the main eateries there - so come on St Fagan's tea room, find a vegan cake recipe (perhaps someone could send them one).
On an eating out note, I met a friend in Exeter yesterday and we had a lovely lunch at The Plant Cafe, 1 Cathedral Yard:A . The people serving were really helpful and fab, cafe comfy and warm with tables outside, the food was amazing, and they are trying to up their vegan offerings - currently aim to have at least one sweet and one savoury - apart from all the usual salads etc. So if you live in the area or are having a day out, go see them and make them famous.
Well done twinkybaby - you'll convert us yet - well dad will be hard-going but hey (he's currently watching the Bourne Supremacy for the millionth time and is wondering how he would escape if a spy came to our house - no gas supply to explode - I suggested lobbing logs from the wood-burner)xxx0 -
Can any of you long term vegans recommend any reasonably priced (cheap) shampoos , conditioners and other toiletries. Ive looked on quite a few websites and they are so expensive as are all the toiletries and cleaning products. So what are the best money saving vegan toiletries ?
As promised, sorry its late, these are the cheap (mostly around £1 and less than £3 for most items) easily available vegan toiletries and cleaning items...
Shampoo/Conditioner– original source, simple, asda little angels eco baby shampoo
Shower gel/bubble bath – original source (also body scrubs), simple, asda little angels eco baby bubble bath
Cleanser – simple (various), amie morning clear purifying facial wash (superdrug), petal perfect refreshing cleansing lotion (superdrug)
Face scrub – amie new leaf skin exfoliating polish (superdrug)
Deodorant– original source, simple
Eye make-up remover – simple, amie (superdrug)
Suncare - simple
Handwash – astonish, simple (both available in cheap shops and £1 shops)
Soap - most supermarkets sell there own brand vegan 100% vegetable soap, called pure in superdrugs, sainsburys and tesco. Morrisons also do a couple, can't remember the name.
Handcream – simple
Shaving cream – original source, simple
Facemasks – montagne jeunesse (they also do footcare products, but not as easy to find in the shops), simple
Moisturiser – simple, amie morning due matt finish (superdrug), optimum line decrease radiance balm (superdrug), asda little angels eco baby lotion
Cleaning items:
astonish do sprays, creams, dishwasher tabs, car care, carpet shampoo, washing clothes liquid, floor cleaner, disinfectant and many more available for £1 for most items. Usually only found in bargains shops such as home bargains, pound shop.
Green force do washing up liquid, washing clothes liquid, cleaning fluids (try wilkinsons)
Some of the supermarket washing liquids and laundry products are also vegan. I know Asda and Morrisons label them as vegan.
Most simple items are vegan. Link provided in a previous post to the ones that are not.
I have found many vegan bargains (different to the ones mentioned above) in the pound shop and home bargains. Its just a matter of looking and waiting until the next lot of vegan stuff comes in and then stocking up on it.

I love original source too, but unfortunately, they are owned by Cussons, who do test on animals. I'm fairly sure all the co op range are vegan, but the vegan soc has just brought out a new animal free shopper.
Hi Teria,
This statement is in the animal free shopper:
'PZ Cussons UK Ltd have a policy of not conducting nor commissioning animal testing and is an authorised user of the vegan society logo'.
So I guess we can use original source without guilt. I assume all there other products are not vegan though and notice they are on the uncaged boycott list. Confused.....
Thanks

Murrell do you think your method would work with almonds?
I have made sweet almond spread with ground almonds and orange juice and its similar to the cashew one. These are sweet versions though and not like the roasted spreads that you get in jars that are must better. They are just different and tasty when you fancy a sweet sandwich.

I have a question about TVP (soya mince). It sounds a great idea as a meat replacement but have noticed when I've eaten it, I get a bad stomach and gas the next day. Does this tell me its a highly processed unnatural food? It also doesnt look that appealing dried, a bit like breadcrumbs. Should I stick to natural protein sources if I'm to stay veggie? Such as lentils?0
