I made the unwelcome discovery recently that Aldi Dairyfine Dark Chocolate no longer appears to be vegan, as it now contains lactose.

However, their Dark Chocolate Digestives still look OK.

Iceland dark chocolate and dark fruit and nut used to be vegan. One time I bought it and at the first bit I realised the recipe had changed and noticed that they'd put buttermilk in it. I sent an e-mail to complain and they said they hadn't changed the recipe, but the buttermilk hadn't been listed before! Blatant lie.

Tesco value dark chocolate did the same. :(

You have to be ever-vigilent with these "accidentally vegan" products. Bourneville chocolate, for example, has switched from being vegan to non-vegan and back again several times.
  • I found a great series of lectures on YouTube, at the VSH (Vegetarian Society of Hawaii), many of the speakers are vegan and all of them are very interesting to watch. There is a lot of nutritional advice, health, sociology, psychology, animal welfare by international top speakers such as Colin T Campbell, Will Tuttle, Brenda Davis and Bill Harris to name a few. It makes me wish we had something so good here in the UK. (Do we and I just don't know about it?)

  • Hello Twinkle. I am a vegan person and before that I was vegetarian. I like to have coconut drinks. I am also keen on having Alpro soya products. I always have bread that has the words vegetarian and vegan on it. In the summer I eat a lot of salad. Asda has low prices on that in the warmer times of the year.
  • I'm ridiculously excited about being a new vegan. I always get extremely 'into' my thing of the moment. I was the same when I first became vegetarian (I don't mean I'll give up or it's a passing fad but just that I get totally immersed in reading and discussing everything for a while).

I think I'll find the food side of being vegan fairly easy. As long as I can have salad cream (yay Sainsburys again) and Vegemite then I'm happy.

I'm going to find the toiletries side of things REALLY hard though. Since I stopped smoking my thing has been buying lovely lovely toiletries and cosmetics and pampering myself. But I'm pretty sure the majority, if not all, of my toiletries are not vegan.:(

It's taken me years to find a hairdye I like and it's on the Bad list at the vegan society. My hair is almost totally white so the Henna dyes from Lush wouldn't work I don't think as I'd end up with bright red roots where the white hair is. I have a years supply of my dye in the bathroom (it was on special offer) so have a year to hope someone comes up with an excellent chocolatey brown permanent, grey covering dye. (Seen a few vegan dyes but the colours aren't great and going natural isn't an option as I'm only 27).

I also have psoarisis on my scalp so use t-gel once a week (also a no-no in vegan world). nothing else I've tried (and believe me I've tried a lot) works and it's gets so bad I scratch til I bleed. Anyone know of a vegan frendly alternative? Normal Head & Shoulders type shampoos don't work.

I've got like a years worth of all my toiletries so got plenty time to find alternatives but I think the food side is definitely the easy bit.

This may have already been suggested but Salcura products are meant to be a good brand for skin complaints. I managed to get some on clearance at Ocado.

    Hi,

Just a quicky post, as it have noticed a couple of things posted that are not all vegan. If you can amend your posts that may make it easier for new vegans, thanks a lot

Ecover hasn't been vegan for the last year or two. Hopefully they will give up the animal testing and we will see the vegan logo again sometime soon.

Simple are mostly vegan not all. There is about 4 things that aren't they are listed on there web site, soap, zinc baby cream, i think a hair conditioner or two. I look for the wording 'contains no animal deprived ingredients' then i know they are vegan.

    Hope this helps.

Manufactured by Unilever so ambiguous. I'm pages behind so this may have already been mentioned.

Hang fire - it's IWD on 8th March, and there's usual an offer at a discounted price somewhere so keep an eye on the Grabbit board.

Not sure how it relates to this thread, though :D
