By the way, thanks Murrell and Money maker for the info re soap. I'll have a look in Tesco and Superdrug next weekend. I don't want to buy soap from health food shops as they are usually extortionately expensive! I've just ordered my sample of the black soap.

No probs. The tesco one is cheaper than the superdrug one and you can buy in multi packs to save more money.

    Hi clairibel,

You good try goodnessdirect for online food, they label everything thats vegan.
    http://www.goodnessdirect.co.uk
Not used them myself, but they look good.
Good to hear that you want to become vegan. I am here as a online vegan mentor if you need help in any way. I am also taking part in testing the vegan recipes and the nutrition side of weezls feed a family of 4 for £100 a month. Plan 1 is about 50% vegan and plan 3 is vegan, which is the one we are working on now, whilst our test families follow plan 1. Plan 2 is veggie and that will follow later, as its harder to put together than the vegan one. If you want to come over and test any, weezl would like more testers. I also post my tests on my blog along with other vegan recipes.
    Bye for now.

Murrell, just wanted to say that I really enjoyed your blog. :T

I'm still an omnivore but I'm trying to eat more vegan food. I'm consuming very little meat and fish but the dairy is tricky as cheese seems to be my favourite food.:o I had been trying to eat oily fish for health reasons too so getting omega 3s will take a bit more effort. I eat flaxseeds ground up on porridge (but don't eat that every day) so I'm not sure I'm getting enough omega 3.

Any advice for a beginner is very welcome! :)
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

Glad you like my blog, been too busy keeping up with weezls thread to post much on it lately.
Rapeseed oil (usally just called vegetable oil) and walnuts to a lesser degree are also good sources of omega 3s and less expensive. Your right about grinding up flaxseeds so thats good. You can also add ground flaxseed to soup or casserole just as you serve it. Rapeseed oil is easy to incorporate in your diet, as you can use this instead of other oils or even margarine in some recipes. If you like nut butters, you are prepared to make one yourself, you can mix nuts/pumpkin seeds, brazil nuts and rapeseed oil to make a nut butter that is not just high in omega 3's, but selium too. Selium is difficult to get in the diet, due to the low soil content in the UK, but at least there is some, some countries have non in the soil. The best source is brazil nuts. Just 10 a week, supplies all the selium you need and if you then get small amounts from veg/rice, thats a bonus. There is a recipe on my blog, 17th April, currently the second to last post. You can fry with rapeseed oil, make salad dressing, make cakes with it. The savoury bites that I have been testing for weezl, also on my site, also use rapeseed oil and are very tasty. Basically if you use rapeseed oil whenever you need oil and flax on your porridge when you have it, you will probably be ok. On weezls feed a family of 4 for £100 a month (80p a day), her porridge is made with rapeseed oil for the omegas. The recipe looks yuk, and it smells like your cooking chips, but it tastes good. If you visit her blog, you will also find many vegan recipes.

Hope this helps. If you need anymore help, just ask.

Hope you enjoy your vegan adventure. Let us all know how you are doing, please post recipes if you discover anything new and ask questions if needed. Glad you like my blog, I started it because of this thread.

You don't have to follow weezls challenge, if you look at her blog, you will also find many vegan recipes and there will be more added as we test them. No doubt I will get round to testing some too and adding my efforts to my site.

Thanks Sandra, that's great info! :T I'm delighted to find that I'm doing something right as rapeseed is my "standard" oil. I haven't tried any HM nut butters but I will look into it as I'm sure they are healthier and nicer than the shop bought peanut butter I sometimes eat. I really love nuts, especially almonds and brazils.

I really like Weezl's blog too and often stop by the thread on feeding a family on a pittance. It's such a great idea.

Good, yes weezls info is good isn't it. Hope you get on well making nut butters, you can just experiment and make combinations that you wouldn't be able to buy. You don't need to add sugar either like the shop bought ones and salt is optional. You can rinse salt of salted peanuts and go without or use lo-salt, as another alternative, if you want to be extra healthy.
