where to I go to put this lot in, I have been in so many areas of the comps trying to figure it out, I have forgot where everything is

Cheers Godders, I'll remember to tell savster how good you have been

LOL thanks, if she EVER gets back online again.

    Right -
    1. Most of the setup to create the secure wireless network will be best done on your PC, not the wireless laptop.

    2. Unless specified all the work will be carried out on the interface you get when you launch your web browser on the PC, and navigate to http://192.168.0.1 (or whatever that address was when you did the initial config)

    3. Should we do it in stages icon10.gif

    4. I'm downloading your manual now so should be able to tell you the next bit soon

    1. According to the manual the web address you should be browsing to is

    http://192.168.1.1

    2. Enter "admin" and "admin" as the user name and passwords (as long as you haven't changed them

    3. You should then have a series of Tabs across the top:

"Setup" You should have done everything needed in here just to get on the internet icon10.gif

"Wireless". The second box down should be the "Wireless Network Name (SSID)" and will probably be set to "Linksys" at the moment. This is quite simply the name of your wireless network. Firstly change this to something you will remember but NOT identifiable (not your house name for example)

    4. If you save this setting then your laptop will loose its connection to the network (because it's a different name now). Just right click on the wireless network icon near the clock (hover the mouse over them to find it) and select "View Wireless Networks". Your laptop should scan for networks and find one with the name you just gave it. Double click on it to connect and you should get back online

NOTE - this is not really turing on security, just turning off the defaults. You can try this from the laptop but MIGHT have to kick him off for a minute or two :p

(Sorry if this is too slow, I'm just trying to cover all the steps)

OK - now you have your own name it's time to stop everyone else from seeing it. This bit assumes you are running XP Service Pack 2 as the wireless network stuff changes depending on your version.

From your PC get back to the Router admin interface (Browse to 192.168.1.1 and enter the user ID and password)

    1. Click on the Wireless Tab and Look at the box that says "Wireless SSID Broadcast". Turn this to "Disable" to stop your router from broadcasting to all and sundry the (now personal) name of your network.

    2. When you save this change and reboot you will need to tell your laptop the name of the network if it doesn't remember it (I'm doing this off the top of my head ATM)

If your laptop doesn't reconnect on it's own (and you will need this screen in a bit anyway) then do this:

    3. Click Start->Control Panel->Network Connections

    4. Right Click on Your "Wireless Network Connection" and select "Properties"

    5. I think the middle tab is "wireless networks", click on it.

    6. If the name of your network is not listed in the box at the bottom then click on the "Add" button

    7. In the box that appears enter your personalised network name in the "SSID" box at the top. Leave all the security set to "Disabled" for now and click OK

    8. Your network should now be listed in the "Preferred Networks" box, make sure it is at the top of the list and click OK

Your laptop should now rediscover the wireless network after a few seconds.

(Please note I'm doing this without a wireless laptop in front of me so I'm describing the screens from memory - don't be to harsh if it's not exact)

  • To be secure, you need to setup wpa with a strong key, there are some instructions for a netgear here:

Linksys will be similar, but I have never used one, so you need a linksys user to advise you..

It might be worth changing the channel it broadcasts on to get one with less interference - it might cut you off for a sec but if you want to try it just let me know icon10.gif

  • Are you sure you are connecting to your router, and not a neighbours? Switch the router off to test...

This will tell you what's out there:

    http://www.netstumbler.com/downloads/

It will kill your connection while it running.

You might find that the recommended channel has been used by other people in your area - it's also possible that when you connected and didn't know how you did it you locked onto someone elses router not your own icon10.gif

To change the channel just browse to the admin interface and log in (as above). Go onto Wireless and try a different channel to the one it is set too. It might be worth changing the SSID at the same time to something you will recognise you you will be 100% sure you are on your own.

(This might sound unlikely but in my works London office we pick up 10-15 wireless networks, many on the defaults and cannot get anything to work with the default channels)
