    Hello!

I'm making flatjacks for the first time at the moment, and they have been in for 25 mins and are still really soft and gooey. They are on 180C. Do they need more time?

    Thanks!!

They'll harden as they cool. If you leave them in too long you'll need a jack hammer to cut them :o

Thanks Penny, I decided to take them out and mark into squares and they have just started hardening. I was worried as my recipe book said "mixture will be quite firm to the touch" and it really wasn't!

Leave them to cool completely in the tin before you try and get them out.

In my experience there is quite a fine line between too soft and too hard. You really need to experiment with your oven to get them just how you like them. Mine are best after 23 mins at 170 degrees in a fan oven.
  • I like to let mine get a little brown. 30 mins does it.

I let them cool completely and then got them out, very easy to get in squares. They taste more like a granola bar I had recently, but still yummy...not bad for my first attempt.

I've had problems baking in my oven before, cakes take a long time, but crumbles are done quite fast. Will just have to make some more to test my oven!!

My son loves flapjack but whenever I make it it turns out hard and crispy, does anyone have a recipe to bake lovely soft flapjack?

i've tried thiftladys recipe and it works perfectly. they are slightly crispy on outside but moist and chewy inside. perfect.i used i'd prob say about double the syrup as i was bit over generous, lol. but still perfect result's.

when i cook it i preheat oven for about 10 mins and put flapjack on middle shelf and i leave it for around 30 min's until to thop just starts to go a little golden. must leave in tin to cool tho.we do find the flapjacks are nicer on day to as there not as greasy. but my son who doesn't like flapjack now loves them.

    enjoy.

I would suggest making them deeper and/or not cooking them as long, then they would be softer.
I prefer mine crispy but keep making them too soft lol and I think that's what I'm doing wrong!

  • I made some today...my recipie is:

    8oz any marg or butter
    4oz sugar brown or white
7 tablespoon syrup & 1 tablespoon treacle (or 8 of syrup, or a combo)
16oz oats (sometimes include old oaty cereals, cornflakes, nuts, rice krispies etc)
(these are double quantities from my original recipie, and go in 1 adult 3 kids lunch boxes for 1 week)

    Preheat oven 180 C
grease large shallow tin - I use cooking oil, used to use marg.
Melt all stuff except oats in pan til runny & mixed, but dont boil.
Mix in oats (off the hob)
Plop onto baking tray (heres my trick - use a metal potato masher dipped in cold water to really squish down the mixture into the tin, keep dipping and wiping off excess water, as the oaty stuff won't stick to the cold metal so much - cold hands works too)
Put in oven for 15 mins or thereabouts - depends on your oven, mines a fan oven.
I gently pre-cut mine into about 26-28 squares as soon as they come out, and then leave to cool.
    Never fails.
The edges are a bit crispy which my DD likes, and the middle is more moist which the others like.
Sometimes I put chocolate cake covering on top and they all love that.
