Ta
As a rule of thumb I always use equal quantity of butter and sugar with the combined weight/volume of both in oats, along with a couple of tablespoons of syrup ... i.e. 4oz each of butter and sugar, 8oz oats and 2 tbsp syrup ... so it doesn't matter what you use to weigh/measure the proportions will always be the same. Melt the sugar, butter and syrup in a pan then stir in the oats. If you like chewy flapjack then bake it on gas 4, but if you like it crunchier then bake it on gas 5 for about 15-20mins."An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

Hi all,
Now I don't consider myself an awful cook I bake regularly but one thing I have never got right is the humble flapjack. Now today I was sensible enough to go with a recipe (nigella) and yet again they have come out all crumbly:eek: and would make good granola. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I've got a fan oven so I do get them out before the time stated. I haven't been heavy handed with anything.
I'm now thinking what to do with them as it's a great big tray. It's a bit unhealthy for breakfast but it must be good for something. Any advice most appreciated.0 -
Put with ice cream and freeze in batches, would be scrummy like that!0

Put it on apple crumble!0

Hi potsofmoney,
You aren't the only one who has problems making flapjacks! Some of the suggestions on this thread might help next time.

Thank you all,
I'm definitely doing something wrong but am going to persevere until I get it right. Until then its apple crumble and flapjack icecream! lol if you ever watch master chef and someone makes flapjacks you never know it may be me....in my dreams0 -
I found they work better if you use a recipie without golden syrup: it turns them to concrete! Try putting them in the fridge to cool, as the previous poster does.0

try this with them, Nigella has a recipe like this in one of her books though ive never tried it myself0 -
We have found that the oats that the flapjack is made with makes a big difference, we have found tescos value oats much better than the finest range.0
