It may be the ten searches that's affecting your applications. Cool it for a while and you may have more success.
Are you on the electoral role?
Have you tried any of the sub-prime offerings? (i.e. cards listed in post #1)

I had a default issued by Shop Direct Financial Services (for a Choice catalogue) removed just by writing one letter!
It's definitely worth a go, they can only say no - and if they say yes it's a brilliant credit file boost.
