They sort our recycling boxes at the gate into a huge lorry all split into different sections, anything they don't recycle they just leave behind. Unfortunately here, they don't take any plastic unless it's milk bottles whether or not the plastic has the recycling symbol on it :(
Organised people are just too lazy to look for things

Our recycling team do not take any plastic at all. I save it all, until there is a car full, in the garage to take to the local recycling center. I hate the thought of all that plastic going to landfill!

No ours don't either and depending on which council website I believe there is either no facililties at all in the town for recycling any plastic, or there is a limited facility for bottles only, a distance away from me.
  • Well, February is almost over!! Are we all 'used up' and organised??
Or are you like me - still ploughing through all the wierd and wonderful things you've found when turning out?
I have so many supplies of bogof's and the results of 'Bootsing' that I'm going to start buying them back from my stores when I open a new one- putting the money in a jar so I can see how much I've had tied up!
I've also promised myself I will not get so overstocked again - will be interesting to see the state I'm in next Feb!!
So keep on using up! :T :T :T

I read somewhere that we only wear 20% of our clothes 80% of the time, so lets liberate the other 80% and let them see the light of day!! :j

i've enjoyed this challenge this month and it's really helped with our food budget too :T

i'm going to continue on in march as well

maybe we should do a flylady type thing where we have a use it up challenge in a specific area of the home each month

for bedroom you could try to wear all the clothes you don't wear (or get rid of what you won't/can't wear anymore by selling or giving them away)

for kids bedrooms it could be a focus on the clothes but also the toys, again selling or giving away what doesn't get used and fixing broken toys so they can be played with again and/or making new toys from old stuff etc

bathrooms and kitchens are pretty obvious

attic/storage cupboards/garage ooh lots of use it up stuff in those etc

I used to do this when I bought catering sizes. Sacks of potatoes were sorted into large for jackets and the rest packed into 5lb bags which I bought from myself at shop prices.

Catering sizes of coffee were decanted into 8oz sizes.

The surplus helped me to buy other large sizes or provided the funds to buy Marmade tins and the resulting marmalade also went into the home shop.
  • our recyclers take all sorts of plastic bottles, detergent, bleach, pop & squash bottles, shower gel handwash bottles, but not the lids???? also all glass jars & bottles goes in the same bin, and they've had lots of little ones this month as i've used samples and bits of things up. my recycling bin is full for the first time ever, lol.

our council is good as we have bag for paper and box for other recycling which includes most plastic (except food trays and yoghurt pots), glass, tins, cans including aerosols. most of my stuff ends up recycled from the kitchen and the bathroom so i feel like i'm doing my bit! :T

as a result i don't even fill half a wheelie bin in two weeks (our bins get emptied fortnightly)the majority of the time. :D

Not sure where I heard this tip but it worked for me:

Whenever you put something back in your wardrobe after wearing or washing it, put it in on the far right hand side of the rail. Therefore, with minimal effort, it soon becomes clear what you can get rid of. After the appointed time, just take out the things on the left that you haven't worn for ages. I like this one as it kind of does itself.

I've loved this thread and thought the timing was brilliant: a good time to use things up in a month that can often be a financially lean one, and from a tidiness point of view, just in time for a spring clean. (I know Flylady says we'll never need to spring clean again, but it's still been good to have a mini clear out.)

Please can we make this thread an annual event?
