Do you really need an ISP?

A friend of mine has told me that you do not need an ISP to get onto the Internet, as long as you have a modem.
Just wondering if there's any truth in this. Surely, if this were the case, ISP's would not exist?
Can someone please clarify ...

You may find a wireless access point where a company or home user has a wireless network but doesnt have security or allows other users to use there network, they call them hotspots.
You need a laptop and a wireless card really for this.0 -
No need for ISP.
Just pay Local Rate, as you need it! Set it up ion Dial Up networking in windows, use any username and password, and set to dial thoe following number:

Youll still need a supplier for connection..i.e BT or summet like that.0 -
You can pay to use paid hotspots too BT do one, but it aint cheap. You can surf net while have a Mcdonalds burger etc
You use to get a free isp years ago on dialup but I dont think that works now. Pay as you go still excists even on broadband but it may be cheaper if you use net to get a normaly ISP.0 -
May be he means you do not need to go to the ISP's portal web page - which you do not.
Without the ISP who is he going to call on his modem ?
If he has a work's dial-in access then he could get to the internet that way ..
The PC needs to get a valid IP address

Yes you need an ISP regardless as a Isp is acting as a gateway between you and the internet

All that does is cancel CLID. The call can still be traced by someone with the time, means, energy and inclination. There used to be a Radio 1 phone line that still picked up where you were calling from even if you used 141. Don't know what the number was or if it still exists though, sorry.
I think what the OP was getting at was the following:
Is it possible to connect to the internet without using an ISP as a gateway, i.e. being your own ISP - cutting out the middleman so to speak. I think that this *would* in theory be possible, but would be far too expensive. The ISPs benefit from economies of scale by being big therefore passing at least some of their saving on to us. I'm not sure how you'd go about it, though I'm sure it would be the same way the ISPs do. I'm more than certain it would work out more expensive than an ISP though.#145 Save £12k in 2016 Challenge: £12,062.62/£12,000.00 Beginning Balance: £5,027.78 CHALLENGE MET
