A car doesn't have to be taxed by its driver, but its owner.

The owner's insurance is all that is needed to tax it.

So if the owner went to tax the car say at the post office and he produced an insurance cert and log book and the reg number was different would they not query this? Or do you just need to produce a valid cert?

What about the other car that I will be using? What is needed for that? It needs to be insured (But it will be), and taxed (which it will be) - but what else? Surely if I buy a cheap £50 banger then it should be fine?

An MOT. (Assuming its 3 years+ old)

You do need an insurance certificate that covers the vehicle to be taxed!

Also I would think that even though you are driving this car on your insurance, your father would still have to declare you as the main driver to prevent a charge of fronting which would negate the cheap insurance

Why? He won't be driving on his father's insurance policy.

No - i'm nothing to do with his policy.

It's my policy extending to his car - he can't exactly put himself as the named driver on a policy he's the only name on!

have you tried costing insurance with your dad as a named driver on you policy as this sometimes brings the cost down ,also go through a cashback site ie,quidco cashback kings and always go straight to the insurer not through a broker as this also hikes the price up

the cheapest I can get with everything done (inc named driver, pass plus, NCB) etc is from Quinn anyway - and they have no cashback.

  • if your only 3rd party driving your dads car and you write it off is he going to be happy having no payout?
