How Do I keep my numerous BT email addresses if I change ISP

Options
Hi

I have been with BT Broadband (BT Yahoo) for 4 years. I have numerous email addresses with them. I want to move to a new ISP, but I cannot afford to lose my email addresses.

I would appreciate any help and advise from anyone who has moved successfully from BT Yahoo.

Cheers,

  • Convert your account to a PAYG (Pay as you go). I believe you then have to just dial in every 3 months to keep the account active.

I have done this for 30 months now having moved from BT .

  • The only problem is that you can receive emails sent to your account when not connected to BT, but you cannot send them from that account. This is why I decided to get a gmail account that I can use whichever isp I decide to use.

  • You can send from that account while connected via another ISP. All you need to do is change the smtp server in the email account settings to the current one. I use Virgin.net but still use my BTInternet email addresses, both sending and receiving.

Of course you can, just set the SMTP for your old accounts to the new SMTP from your new isp and then you can send and receive.

I've got 4 old email addresses from old isp, but I still use them.

    Hope this helps

    Works for me too.

Perhaps you can help me then as no matter what I do, I can only send messages that have the reply address of the sending smtp email id.

In other words - if somebody sends me an email to my bt internet account, I reply to it and they see the reply coming form my other email address!

I have tried so many times with several different email accounts - always with the same result. I thought it was a security thing in email so that you couldn't send messages and make them look as if they had come from elsewhere !

I use Outlook by the way.

I use BT Broadband and have a BT Internet email address on a pay as you go account, as well as Freeserve ones. A while back, BT changed it so you need a password to send e-mail with their SMTP server. I presume that this now means you can use it to send mail when connected via any ISP.

In Outlook Express (I presume Outlook is similar), select Tools > Accounts. Select an email account and press Properties. Select the Servers tab. I have outgoing SMTP server as smtp.btopenworld.com At the bottom of that window, make sure that the My server requires authentication box is ticked, then select Settings.

Select Use same settings as my incoming mail server if this is a BT account. If it's not a BT account, select Log on using and enter your BT username and password.

Note that Log on using Secure Password Authentication should not be ticked.

Press OK on all the windows and send an email(s) to test it out.
  • Thanks DonnyDave.
Outlook and Outlook Express are similar.

My BT account specifiers that I should use mail.btinternet.com for both POP3 and SMTP.

My settings are as you describe, and I also tried setting the smtp port to 587 as per BTYahoo help.

I get an error when I test the settings - this is the same error I heve had for the last 2.5 years when trying to send email when not dialled in to BT -

Outlook could not logon to the outgoing mail server (SMTP). The problem could be your server name, the server may require authentication. or your server may not support SSL. Verify authentication and SSL settings under more options.

The server name is mail.btinternet.com as per their help page - I also tried smtp.btopenworld.com - same error. I have specified authentication, and I have also tried with and without SSL - it makes no difference.

It is a bit of a pain, and this is why I posted above that it did not work. It looks like others have it sussed out so maybe they can update this thread for us that don't?

    Cheers
    Mike

  • Hi
Make sure in Connections, the box is ticked for "Always connect to the account using" and set to your isp, for all accounts.

    Hope this helps
