Hello

I am wondering if anyone out there's got a ford focus 1.6 (petrol).
We have just bought one after upgrading from a suzuki alto that did 270 miles per its 25 ltr tank.. about £23 to fill.

I know the fuel consumption is going to go up but I'm thinking we have made an awful mistake.. because our first tank only saw about 270 miles and its over twice the size of our suzuki!!! I know we are getting used to the car so not dricing right yet but still...

Can someone out there tell me how much they get to their tank on average? We drive motorway and towns everyday.

Thanks

Bex

    I have an 02 1.8 zetec petrol.

On a full tank of about £40 I normally get 400-450 miles depending how I drive ;) I have found driving at 60 gives the best mpg.

I normally fill up with £20 and get about half a tank (depending what the price of petrol is that week) and get about 170-180 miles which is just short city journeys, 10-15 miles.

If you put a full tank in and only got 270 miles then something is wrong.
  • I dont own one of these but I often get them in work if I have to go somewhere. The MPG seems to average in the high 30s. I reckon you should be getting somewhere near 400 miles out of a tank.

You could get a lot less if you are sitting in traffic a lot though.

    Are your tyres inflated correctly?

We used to get around about 400 miles from a tank in the 03 1.6 we had.

I found this I just googled

" This car is resonable to fill up a full tank costs £40-45 and gets you about 300-350 miles."

SWMBO's 1.8 sounds particularly unrefined (if that sort of thing bothers you), but has proved to be very reliable if a tad thirsty (300 - 350 miles on a full tank)

    I have a 2006 Focus Mk2 1.6 T-VCT Petrol. I am currently getting 44.3mpg,
    over 530 miles per tank.

    Secrets? -

    1) DON'T use supermarket petrol - I used to get 33mpg using
    Tesco's
    - 2) Train yourself to accelerate SLOWLY (unless a real
    emergency)
    - 3) Think ahead - sharp corner ahead? - take foot off go
pedal and aim to hit corner at a speed you can take safely WITHOUT braking.
Look ahead to traffic lights - red? do the same. Avoid braking as much as
possible - braking is WASTED energy - LOTS - preserve your momentum.
    - 4) Stick to 70 - 75 mph on motorways, even an extra 1 mph
at that speed is a dramatic increase in fuel consumption.

THINK - what am I going to do with the extra minute I have saved
    when I have arrived?

In general, if you think ahead and treat driving as a game of chess it
becomes truly more enjoyable and you can get to your destination in the same
    amount of time, refreshed.

    I have a 02 reg 1.6 lx.

I get around 350-400 out of a full tank but I do mainly town driving.

Ahh you have all made me feel better.. Give it a few more tanks me thinks to get used to driving the car economically..

It's an 06 plate Sport (altho sport means nothing other than alloys and some other trim related stuff..)

Antispam, I am not sure if the cars the same as yours but sounds similar.. not sure of the engine! And where do you get petrol ... and do you use the super unleaded or the normal stuff?

What do you reckon I should do if I don't get a good mpg from it after a few runs? Only just bought it, from a main dealer.

Dont worry easy mistake to make
  • I had a 99 Focus 1.6 Ghia, I used to average about 500 to a tank, but that was driving ultra carefully and mainly motorway miles. Best I ever got was 550 but that was rare.
