I personally would try to convince him to go to the US too.

I totally can see your position that the canaries would be a let down, all the moreso as you wont get to see your dad.

3000 is a hell of a lot of money and I personally would want a holiday of a lifetime for that. Im afraid laying on a hotel poolside in the canaries ISNT holiday of a lifetime. Its my belief you can lie on a concrete poolside anywhere in the world and its all the same. Especially if your OH has lost his family member it seems to me to be a fitting rememberance to use that money to keep the family relationships going.

I would not spend 3k in the canaries, im sorry I just wouldnt.

Have you thought about popping to the library and getting a lonely planet ( USA on a shoestring or similar) We always use these to hunt out great things to do whenever we travel, they are meant for those without stacks of money and can give excellent ideas on places to stay/ eat etc.

We came back from Vegas a few motnhs ago and although we spent a fair amount ( mainly in outlet shopping & gambling!) it neednt have been too expensive. When we headed out to death valley a motel with pool and 2 beds in was about 35 quid a night, perfectly clean and in the most picturesque settings.

Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

I was chatting with OH earlier and i think his main reservation was my idea of hiring a camper van, i thought he would love that as he always talks of us upgrading from our caravan to a camper.
I now realise that he doesn't want to spend two weeks driving around and staying at camp sites.
I did say to him what would make you go and he said a log cabin!!!!
So know i have to try and find one in our budget!!!!!
I hope he isn't just saying that because he knows how expensive it will be!!!!
I don't get nearly enough credit for not being a violent psychopath.

I just Googled "rent log cabin california" and there are masses of places, including in the National Parks. They look really luxurious and not expensive. Good luck!

Nah you dont need to hire a camper and tbh the gas would be more expensive- difficult to drive maybe, and then you might struggle to get a RV park, depending on seaosn Im not sure. I know RVs can be quite expensive to hire.

If you have a CC you can probably hire a good car for 150 quid a week or so ( nice automatic, roomy, we had a sebring) then you can pull into motels wherever you fancy :)

We don't have one but would consider getting one if necessary.

I'm glad you've got to the crux of the 'problem'.

In Europe it is difficult to hire a car without a credit card but I don't know if it is the same over there.

You'll have a great time I am sure.

I think I've stayed in nicer log cabins - but not in CA
Why don't you ask your Dad for a couple of recommendations that you'll be able to check out on the web
"One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."

Looks okish, not sure about the dead animals on the walls though! Micky Mouse waffle iron is a definite plus. ;)
Am sure that you could find better, or someone else could for you.
