Try posting on the travel section, they may come up with more ideas on keeping the costs down.
Hiring an RV can be expensive, but you'd need a car at least anyway & obviously you dont need to worry about hotel rooms...
I know which I'd choose even without your dad there (who I love the sound of too) but adding him into the mix would really make it a special holiday. Would it be possible to camp near where his bus is parked? Sounds like he's the guy to help you do things on the cheap too, he might know of good local deals.
Alternatively if he really wont change his mind what about going for a cheap holiday in the canaries this year & putting a couple of grand towards going to California next year. Will give you more of a chance to save. I always worry about arrangements like that though, as it's easy for the money to get used on unplanned things (or is that just me?

Does he understand how you feel about seeing your dad. Why not spend two weeks in Disneyland and have your dad join you for a week.
You need to sit down and sort things out or you could build up resentment.0 -
2 weeks in Disney....sounds like hell on earth.0

No we really couldn't afford the £300 my DH is insistant that the £3,000 is used on a really good holiday as another poster pointed out if it it isn't all used it will get swallowed up with every day living. We also have four passports to pay for out of it as well!!!PolishBigSpender wrote: »You couldn't afford 300 pounds to fly your father over?
If you can't get two weeks in the Canary Islands for your family for less than two and a half thousand pounds, something is very wrong. Use the rest to fly your father over - voila.I don't get nearly enough credit for not being a violent psychopath.0 -
Canaries  hasnt your hubby heard, its sooo dangerous there now, with it being a major drug running route from North Africa into Spain.
Northern California in comparision is very safe, Arnie is in charge after all
and its full of hippies.
Obviously avoid South Central LA :eek:0 -

2 weeks lounging by the pool in the Canaries? Oh well, I suppose we're all different
.
JxxAnd it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end0 -
Canaries won't be cheap either - the euro issue is as bad as the dollar issue.
Are you sure your DH just doesn't fancy spending 2 weeks with the FIL? Sorry to be blunt but I'm wondering if you could spend a day or two with your dad, then head off for a bit, then come back would that help?
The other thing is maybe he doesn't fancy the whole camper van driving thing, he just wants to relax. Is there somewhere within a couple of hundred miles of your dad that would offer the whole sunshine and beach experience he's looking for?
In fact I think you need to get him to sit down and be honest about what it is he wants - could be as simple as a pool with a bar
and see if you can find it somewhere within your dad's reach. But give your DH a chance to tell you that he's a bit wary about spending his 2 weeks off with the FIL too... 0 -
My DH now is saying that he thinks we should go somewhere 'safe' that we know we would enjoy such as the canaries etc.
:rotfl:
San Francisco is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. If your husband doesn't think it's a "safe" option in terms of enjoyment then it shows how ill-travelled he is.
Put your foot down and tell him to open his eyes - and enjoy seeing your Dad - none of us are going to be around forever. It sounds like a lovely adventure - isn't that what life is all about?"One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0
