Funny, I've never been to the Canaries and it's not what I'd call a 'safe' option for me... but O/H has been to San Fran and loved it, so I'd be well up for it.

Guess it depends what falls into your comfort zone  apparently mine is 'Italy' and 'Cities' and beach resorts are alien to me ;)

Canaries won't be cheap either - the euro issue is as bad as the dollar issue.

Are you sure your DH just doesn't fancy spending 2 weeks with the FIL? Sorry to be blunt but I'm wondering if you could spend a day or two with your dad, then head off for a bit, then come back would that help?

The other thing is maybe he doesn't fancy the whole camper van driving thing, he just wants to relax. Is there somewhere within a couple of hundred miles of your dad that would offer the whole sunshine and beach experience he's looking for?

In fact I think you need to get him to sit down and be honest about what it is he wants - could be as simple as a pool with a bar :) and see if you can find it somewhere within your dad's reach. But give your DH a chance to tell you that he's a bit wary about spending his 2 weeks off with the FIL too...
I really don't think this is the issue he gets on famously with my FIL well he did when he came over for my wedding (he stayed with us for seven weeks)
He got on better with him than i did!
I think the main issue is he is worried that all the money would have to go on flights and accomadation not leaving much for doing stuff.

You could always get us lot to price some stuff up for you MSE style.

(Lunch at the Cheesecake Factory and a trip to Macys are worth the flight money alone though - don't see his problem ;) )

I can't help thinking that after considering this a package holiday in the sun would be really disappointing!!!

  • At this time of year, you might end up with rain for the duration of the vacation!! When it rains over there it is TORRENTIAL for a few weeks at a time,
So I do understand about OH's concerns, and it is his money.
As the flights are relativly cheap at the moment, from SF to the UK, as others have suggested, could you not send the money to your dad for him to come home in the summertime.

OMG! The Cheesecake Factory...drool... We ended up there because we hadn't booked the place we wanted to go that was full. I really wasn't expecting much from it (& was grumpy at not getting into the Vietnamese) but it was the best meal we had the whole holiday.

There are some great posters on the travel section including several travel agents that can help price up packages or give you ideas.

    I'll start you off.

Take a tram downtown and have lunch in the piano bar at the top of the Regency Hyatt - stunning views.
Dinner at the Cheesecake Factory and pop over to Saks 5th Avenue for some browsing.
Book a trip over to Alcatraz and drive over the Golden Gate Bridge to get the obligatory tourist shot......if you like Hitchcock you can feel all nostaligic about Vertigo too.
A drive down Lomard Street is also a must - curviest street int he world.

Also LA is not that far away - if you get bored of Disneyland then get yourself over to Malibu Beach and Hollywood for a looksee.

I'd personally do a loop drive over to Las Vegas for a couple of days as it's fantastic (and you get to go through Death Valley etc) but it obviously depends on how long oyu were planning to stay with your Dad. We did San Fancisco/Lake Tahoe/Mammouth/ Vegas/Grand Canyon/Lake Havasu/LA in two weeks and it was great - but depends on budget/timing of course - you could certainly fit Vegas in as a San Fran/Vegas/LA road trip though.
