The cheapest loaf of bread

  • Erm, surely the idea with bread is to grabbit as FRESH as possible, not as cheap as possible. That way it won't go stale as old boots by the next morning, you won't throw half of it away, and you'll end up saving money!
Not if you freeze it and then defrost only what you want when you want it. I've found Morrisons to be very good with the quality of the food they put out on clearance. I think the difference is how it is transported and stored prior to being put on the shelves, obviously some companies take more care of this than others.

Just because a product says 'best before today', doesnt mean its stale. However, in some cases, nor does it mean it's still edible! I have noticed Somerfield is horrendous for this- there are often bakery goods covered in green spores! Yuk! And this is sometimes 2 days before the supposed bb date- lord only knows what they do to them, or indeed, why they dont check their shelves more often! I wont buy anything in there now exept tins etc, or emergencies- it really has put me off for life!

  • This is the only loaf for me - and I'll pay any 'sensible' amount for it whilst I'm shopping in Asda for my weekly shop.

Granted, I'll cut back on branded items such as tinned tomatoes and look for any Roll Backs to try and save a few quid BUT when it comes to the loaf, only the Seeded Batch will do.

Someone on OS did calculate it, and it came to something like 25p for white, and 35p for wholemeal using a breadmaker!

    And no yukky preservatives either!

i've just worked it out at the same prices
i only ever have home made bread. the taste and cost is much better than shop bought bread! nothing beats the smell of fresh baked bread. or warm bread straight from the oven, with a bit of proper butter on. yum yum :T
*runs off to bake bread - yummy*

Whats the cheapest NICE bread then?

My fav (supermaket bread) is Warburtons. The plain white med sliced one.

Mostly I buy a freshly sliced organic loaf from the bakers for £1.50.
