Recording streamed audio to mp3. Audacity can't do it.

I want to record part of a radio show.
I've read that you can use Audacity.
However, in my drop down list of sources I only have:
Microphone
Rear Mic
Line In

Other people say that they have "what you can hear" option.

Is this because of a limitation of my sound card?

A viable option is for me to make a jack back to back lead so I could route the headphone signal straigh back into the microphone channel and record.

Is there any software that will do it directly though?

    I'll try that. Thanks.

Edit: Installed latest version, but it's made no difference.

I still suspect that it's to do with the soundcard.

    Yes, is bbc.

It is often assumed that Audacity controls the sources displayed in the input selector, but in fact the sources offered are governed by the drivers of the sound device that is currently selected as the "Recording Device" on the Audio I/O tab of Preferences. Drivers are a big issue on Windows machines, and it often happens that machines purchased new will only be supplied with generic Microsoft drivers. These may prevent the input selector from displaying all the possible inputs the device has (or any at all), or from linking properly to the system mixer (so that for example you end up always recording from line-in, or cannot apparently record at all, whatever source you choose on the input selector).

Try this go to start>control panel>select classic view on the left hand side>click on sound and audio devices>go to audio>press volume>properties>tick stereo mix>press ok>tick the other stereo mix box(microphone would of been selected before)>press ok on all the boxes until your out of it>open audacity>use microphone as the source.

Also looks like the SigmaTel soundcard in the Dell machines is a bit limited:

That thing only works in MME mode. Set HS to MME mode in Options->Audio. If you really start to get into recording, you'll most likely want to get a better soundcard...

I have 3 volume buttons displayed.
    Sound Playback volume.
    Sound Recording volume.
    MIDI playback volume.

Edit: Top one takes me to the volume control screen.
    Properties for that has
    "playback"
    "recording"
no stereo mix option anywhere in there.

  • Use the above link i gave you to download the ram file to your pc!
the links to the BBC shows start with b00 (there clickable!)

    Media Player Classic
    VLC
or KMPlayer will player the file

    better still..

you can also download the real audio file by copy and pasting the link (b00 etc) into the "convert iplayer pid" box..
This will give you the "URL to RealAudio rm stream"

just copy and paste this into this great bit of software....
