There are conflicting stories about the alternative to Chip & PIN Cards which is Chip and Signature:

Banks, Building Societies and Credit Card companies should be providing ALL of us, new or existing customer with information about Chip & Signature Cards, their availability, how they work and how to apply for one.

How about participating in a little experiment, which will help others and probably yourself in years to come and will only take a few minutes of your time?

Call or contact card issuers/banks etc. (your own and/or any other) and ask about chip and signature cards, ask if they provide information in any form on Chip & Signature Cards, such as a pamphlets or information on their website about how these cards work, who is and isn’t entitled to one etc and report your findings on here.

Let’s find out who the good and who the bad guys are. Name and Shame or Sing their Praises.

Your help will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  • There is in fact no reason for anyone who does not want to use a C&P at all if they don't want to!
Just use your debit card as a cheque guarantee card up to the cheque guarantee limit on the card.
This will not work with credit cards of course but you can always just cut them up and throw them in the bin!
There you are C&p no problem at all.
Funny how people who claim that they are unable to remember numbers have no problem with remembering log in details to go on the internet.

    jones999,

I was really asking for help and not to get into a debate - your contribution is appreciated:

    Called Intelligence Finance https://www.if.com today.

Person answering the call (Ehi), new nothing of Chip & Signature cards, and insisted everything had to be Chip & PIN by 14 Feb.

I asked to speak to the Supervisor (Mark). He too new nothing of C&S cards although I quoted their website. He is calling customer services.

Why the naming and shaming? Are you a journalist or something? :)

Maybe you should start a poll thread?

Are the banks legally obliged to offer us chip & signature?
  • Am I missing something? Why should I have a problem with Chip and PIN?
I've been thinking that perhaps some people with disabilities might not like them, but I can't see any difference between tapping in a number and signing your name - in fact tapping in a number is prolly easier. Pray tell, anti-PIN - where's the issue?

Are you telling me that you have a problem remembering 4 numbers?
From your posting above you come across as an intelligent person so why the negativity against Chip and Pin - Is it your personal crusade??
For C&P to work properly there had to come a time when a date had to be set that all retailers had to use it - that date is Feb 14.
Get used to it it won't go away.

    Ejones -

If 'James' is who I think he is - then he's been posting for a couple of years on the Motely Fool (under the name 'JimmyOriginal') about this stuff and I have tried to argue with him several times about the security of C&P:

    http://boards.fool.co.uk/Message.asp?mid=8687604&sort=whole#8700258

    http://boards.fool.co.uk/Message.asp?mid=8800098

    http://boards.fool.co.uk/Message.asp?mid=8802175

    http://boards.fool.co.uk/Message.asp?mid=9505094

Or perhaps it's just easier to look at all his posts:

    http://boards.fool.co.uk/LastPosts.asp?limit=99&submit=Go&uid=188806053

So if it is him - and I suspect it is - the style is very similar - then don't bother arguing - it's a brick wall.

The Merits of Chip & PIN or Chip and Signature are not the prupose of this discussion.

I am merely trying to establish what information card issuers are providing, written or verbally about Chip & Signture cards.

Go on MPH80 get in touch with your own, or a random card issuers and make enquires about Chip & Siganture cards and report your findings back here. You may need one of these cards yourself in the not to distant future.

Angie8 no I'm not a journalist. Just asking other subscribers to submit their findings.

    Thanks in advance:
  • Chip and Signature cards are generally issued on request to disabled and partially sighted groups where PIN usage maybe difficult. In addition most company Credit Cards will be Chip & Signature.

I am not sure there is an ignorance towards them from the banks, Its just that they are not intended to be used as much as you originally suggest.
24 hours in a day. 24 beers in a case ... coincidence?
