Its not rocket science to lift a bag and know its too heavy. I think most people don't understand that hand luggage weight restrictions are there for safety, what happens if your over filled bag falls out of a locker and hits you, or worse, a child on the head and causes an injury?

Best tell that to Easyjet then, they have no weight restrictions.

I am going to hazard a guess that the answer just might have something to do with fragility.

Yeah, Tojo Ralph, but if hand luggage falls out of an overhead bin and hits a child on the head, it doesn't hurt me.

But if it falls on MY head....:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Sorry, I was being a tad facetious, Rachie.

And as the sun sets on another "Hand Luggage" thread, we have again learned.

    a) That there are rules with regards to hand luggage.
    b) That these rules are sometimes enforced.
    c) That these rules are sometimes not enforced.
    d) That for every poster that falls foul of the rules, there will be a poster who doesn't.

    And last but not least.....

    e) The only way to ensure that you don't fall foul of the rules..... Is to follow them.

That's it then folks, I shall bid you all farewell until dawn breaks on another day where we will no doubt find ourselves passing comment on a new Hand Luggage thread. ;)

Maybe it's just me, but perhaps what we need is a "how to get a free upgrade" thread? :D
    ....

I fancy a pizza tonight - can you get me a good deal? ;):p;)
    Gone ... or have I?

I couldn't tell you what 10kgs feels like, and I am a frequent traveller.

Perhaps you could share with us how you can tell that your bag is overweight?

Experience maybe? I have people accoste me with overweight and oversized bags every day while I'm at work. Same for the ground staff, funnily enough they see/handle more bags than you do as a frequent traveller.

Personally, this is what I do.

First off, my carry on bag is ultra lightweight and ways less than 400 grams.

Secondly, I travel light following the three P's rule, Passport, Plastic and Protection... All of which I carry in my jacket pockets.

Now here's the clever bit... I always pack exactly the same items into my hand luggage whenever I am travelling. I never pack anything more, or anything less into my hand luggage, and thus I know that by taking Nine One Kilo bags of sugar every time I travel, I am always carrying less than Ten Kilos.

    Hope that helps. :D

Ah, that's it - experience overrides the use of scales (because of course, they don't have scales at airports). Silly me!

From what I understood I was assuming that lisyloo was talking about having her handluggage 'felt' at the gate, where scales aren't always available. Perhaps everyone should start carrying scales with them? Another thing to make your handluggage overweight! I'm not talking about 0.1kg, I'm referring to bags being alot overweight - eg 5kg etc.

I thought that would have been obvious so I do apologise for not over explaining it to begin with but as frequent travellers I would have expected that you'd have known better than me, someone that does it everyday as part of my job ;)

Well we didn't think it was too heavy according to their regulations.
I don't agree that she could tell by lifting it.

It was not stuffed to the gills or very heavy (if it had been stuffed we wouldn't have been able to get the contents into our pockets).

    Totally agree with you.
But I think a 4kg bag could hurt if it hit a child on the head.

I think this was where the wrong assumption crept in.
We always weigh our bags on scales before we leave home.
She was holding it in one hand and llifting it up adn down and leaning from side to side to assess it.
Even if you do it every day, when we are talking about small weights, I think the scales are better than that technique.

I actually ahve a set of hand scales that I keep in my baggage. My hand luggage bag is 45cm x 35cm x 18cm and is within the size. I can get 4kg ski boots inside it and also all my heavy toiletries inside the ski boot. The only downside is if the toilitries break. The plus side of that is that my boots smell nice instead of AHEM!!!! not nice after a week of skiing :-)

Try it. Actually get a bag that is within the restrictions and try adn put 10kg in it. You would be surprised. :-)

    Cheers

Easyjet let you take as much weight as you like as long as it fits into a standard roll along
"Standard" - ie what you'll see in a shop marked as "cabin luggage" is 56x45x25cm. Easyjet cabin luggage size is 55x40x20cm - ie a near one-third decrease in size.
