Ryanair - One piece of hand luggage means PRECISELY that

  • When I fly, I use my laptop bag as my carry-on: my laptop's got a 15.4" screen, and the bag's big enough to carry one with a 17" screen, so I've got room to put stuff in the main bag and some extra pockets too. I also use my coat pockets for travel wallet, passport, tickets, and so on.

I'm a fairly canny independent traveller.

The secret to beat Ryanair is to get a Poacher's jacket. Voluminous pockets that can take loads. Kitchen sinks can be placed in the lower inside pocket, The upper pocket is only big enough to take a DVD player. Inspector Gadget has an exclusive design that can take lots, coupled with a Mary Poppins bag I cannot see what people are concerned about

You may laugh, but we had an incident (with Alitalia) where the airline employee felt our hand luggage was too heavy (just by feeling it - no scales).
We simply took out most of the stuff and put it in our pockets and gave it too her empty for a feel.
Once we were inside the gate we then put it all back again.

    Totally, completely pointless.
  • Its not rocket science to lift a bag and know its too heavy. I think most people don't understand that hand luggage weight restrictions are there for safety, what happens if your over filled bag falls out of a locker and hits you, or worse, a child on the head and causes an injury?

Totally agree with you Rachie, but why is it worse to if a bag hits a child on the head than if it hits me?

I couldn't tell you what 10kgs feels like, and I am a frequent traveller.

Perhaps you could share with us how you can tell that your bag is overweight?

I am going to hazard a guess that the answer just might have something to do with fragility.

And as the sun sets on another "Hand Luggage" thread, we have again learned.

    a) That there are rules with regards to hand luggage.
    b) That these rules are sometimes enforced.
    c) That these rules are sometimes not enforced.
    d) That for every poster that falls foul of the rules, there will be a poster who doesn't.

    And last but not least.....

    e) The only way to ensure that you don't fall foul of the rules..... Is to follow them.

That's it then folks, I shall bid you all farewell until dawn breaks on another day where we will no doubt find ourselves passing comment on a new Hand Luggage thread. ;)

Maybe it's just me, but perhaps what we need is a "how to get a free upgrade" thread? :D
