well seeing as up till the SL came in uni education was free and paid for why do we suffer a life of economic slavery to the UK (read the small print you cant leave the uk to emigrate untill most of it is paid)

I don't know what small print you've been reading but you can move abroad whenever you want, you just have to keep the Student Loans Company informed of where you've moved and what you're earning so you can continue to make repayments.

    Check out http://www.studentloanrepayment.co.uk/portal/page?_pageid=93,3867114&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL.

personaly i feel making anyone pay for education is inherantly wriong THE FIRST TIME subsequent degrees should be done though your own financial support.

This is absolute rubbish. Some times I wonder where some people on this site get their information!
  • The question being posed is not an ethical one, it's a moral one. And the topic in discussion is illegal, so not something any moneysaver would recommend or endorse.

The 'poor guy' who started this thread has been given all the advice he needs - inform the SLC or whoever of the mistake on his NI number and start paying the loan back! Simple!

very good little miss proper :T now get off your high horse an get back on topic...

I don't think your attitude really helps. As GrammarGirl says, trying to "get out" of paying your student loan is a violation of the terms and conditions of the loan and will more than likely land you in court.

The OP has been advised in multiple posts what the available courses of action are and it's up to them now.
  • Dead simple. You're clearly not fussed about the moral aspects of this issue which are black and white, so let's put it in terms that will mean something to you. Pay your loan back as soon as possible otherwise when they finally catch up with you and make you pay all the compounded interest and penalties it will hurt much more.
  • mines does get a payment at the end of my tax year its just im scanning the net if there are any loopholes to get out of it thats all. if there is none then mine will get paid of in due course.

@argood.,...thanks for ur reply but i only get attitude when people talk down to me, thanks for ur concern no offense..

Loans can be written off if you die or if you can provide medical evidence to show you'll never work again. Or if you reach the maximum age which is (depending on when you took your loan out) 25 years after graduation or when you reach 65.

AFAIK there's no "loopholes". These things are sewn up pretty tight. Some people manage to slip through the net and avoid repaying for a while but sooner or later they get picked up by the system.

I'm rolling my eyes at you! Can you explain what this 'topic' you speak of is? Because I thought we were talking about student loans? You're coming at me with all this stuff about horses... jeeze, I just don't understand!

OK........ of course he should pay it back.... he borrowed it blah de blah.

But, just a genuine question to those who seem to be slating the op for even thinking about not paying.

This is a site where I have read how people are encouraged to not pay bank charges. I have also read threads where people offer advise about offering full and final settlements way below what they originally borrowed. I mean the terms and conditions were there too.

Why are people attacking this one so much?

I don't understand why a student loan is deemed more important to repay than a bank loan with interest and charges.

To me if a person borrows they should pay it back regardless of where it came from.

I think I had better hide now.

In my opinion, it's because the student loans repayment system is so much FAIRER than a loan, overdraft or credit card repayment system. If you can't afford to pay it because you don't earn enough, you don't pay. If you haven't paid it after 45 years (or 25, I think, for newer loans) it's completely wiped off. The interest rate is low and always will be. They won't come and demand payment from you as long as you keep them informed of your situation.

So really, there is no reason not to pay it.

Whereas bank charges are wholly unfair and disproportionate, and credit card debts can spiral out of control due to terrible personal circumstance and massive interest rates. These lenders won't take 'I'm earning less than £15,000' as an excuse - you've gotta pay up, no matter what. That's my viewpoint, anyway.
