I'm not avoiding paying it. I havent witheld information at any point. I don't see how I'm cheating the system?
There's interest being added to it all the time, so when the SLC sort themselves out, i'll be expected to pay back the interest as well.
I pay my taxes and national insurance. I don't see why I should go out of my way to pay something back that is meant to be done automatically. Are they gonna pay for the cost of my telephone calls? Doubt it.

Well as I pointed out to you earlier it's not SLC's fault if your payments haven't started yet. You haven't been matched up by HMRC and your employer hasn't begun deducting the money from your wage.

You say you haven't withheld information but technically you have. You've withheld the information that you're earning over the threshold but aren't currently repaying. That's something you've withheld right there.
And no of course they won't refund the cost of your calls, don't be ridiculous. It isn't SLC's fault that the deductions haven't started, so why should they refund you anything when it's your responsibility to manage your repayments?

If you know you should be paying this money back and for whatever reason your deductions haven't started then by not making the call to SLC to get them to give HMRC a nudge then you're effectively dodging your responsibility to repay. The Ts&Cs that you sign say that the onus is on you to ensure that you start repaying.

Sooner or later you will get matched up, the only question is do you want to start repaying it later when more interest has accrued and you'll likely be repaying for a longer time, or do you want to get it sorted out now?

Please don't think I'm being judgmental or preachy. If I could get away with not paying tax that would be fantastic, but it isn't going to happen. It's the same with my student loan repayments. I had the use of the money and now I have to repay it, it's what I agreed to when I begged and pleaded applied for the money.

Of course you are avoiding paying it!!! How ridiculous. You know you should be, you know it's your responsibility. There are no other facts needed. You are avoiding it.

That is the simplest piece of logic I haave had to apply today.

ok thanks for your opinions on my life.
Question - if I'm earning more than £15,000 a year, but am now a student again, am I still meant to be making repayments?

Ah well, if you're a student again then you aren't expected to be making repayments.

You know, I 'm really unsure now. It's quite an interesting scenario.
The best thing you could do would be to give SLC a ring. Their local (not 0870) number is 0141 306 2000.
Kudos for working enough to earn £15k while studying part time. Your schedule must be hectic!
  • well in my book nothing wrong with trying to get out of paying it back, i had no idea there was even interest on the loan till half way thru my year. nothing was explained to me and i never even signed an agreement. screw them before they screw u. the money is a big pot and its a bigger pot after u pay the interest into it. evryone is for themselves in this world and the sad fact thats true. people make money thru legal robbery or illegal....
  • screw them before they screw u.

That'll be us you'll be screwing then? Do you want us to congratulate you as well?

You must have signed an agreement. You apply for a student loan, they don't just give it to you. You fill in a form which includes ALL the information (including the T&Cs if you look hard enough). The form is substantial and takes time to complete - there is no way you could get a student loan without doing it.

So, somewhere along the line, you WILL have signed something, and you WILL have been provided with all the information in regards to repaying and interest levels. Incidently, the interest rate on student loans is set to fall to 0 in line with the base rate. So no more 'legal robbery' from them, hey?
  • nop cant mind anything like that i just filled out an application form and sent it away with my bank details. i noticed my statment had maintenance payment on it which i was unsure of wot that was. anyhow i pay mine at the end of the year at put it through as an expense ;)..enough said
