Likewise I paid the same way by debit card as I didn't want to get into debt re a credit card. But I'm hoping that the info that the administrators have stated - see post 1 at bottom - from their statement is correct.

You are not alone there are plenty of people in exactly the same boat. Re them having some idea about what was happening I don't know, what I do know is that the manager of the store that I spoke to at 5.20pm this evening said that the administrators walked in and shut them down at 4.30pm. He certainly didn't sound like some-one who knew that he was making his staff redundant today, quite the opposite in fact.

Just want to reiterate hat's been said.

If like me you've lost your job recently, it can be really demoralizing and indignant to have people having a go at you, so when calling or emailing Empire Direct, keep things peaceful, so many have lost their jobs.

(And yes I alsoa bout a £650 f/freezer from them)

KPMG, administrator to the company, which employed 350 people, said the “business really suffered when credit insurers withdrew cover in October”. Credit insurers insure suppliers against the risk of the retailer defaulting on debt.
The Leeds-based retailer was one of the few specialist electrical chains to have survived the competition from Kesa Electricals and DSG International, the owners of Comet and Currys, both of which have seen their own sales come under pressure as consumers refrain from buying “big ticket” electrical and electronic products.
With turnover of £152m, the company had bank overdrafts of £10.9m at its year end in March last year.
In the accounts, directors flagged “the ongoing availability of overdraft facilities” as a potential risk.
Empire Direct, which is 25 years old and was run and part-owned by Madan Showan, had 14 stores which have now been closed, as well as a large website.
KMPG said it was trying to contact customers who had paid for goods but not received them.
  • im sorry mate but it dont wash with me. basicly they have sharfted me and thousands of others and that aint cricket in my eyes. we all work hard for our money and this is last thing that anybody wants to happen. i will try but very much doubt if i can 'hold my tongue' if and when i finally get through on the phone. its human nature to have a go and im affraid if ur gonna be nice or a complete s**tbag ur still gonna be treated like the next or the previous person. they will be more than likely reading from a script drawn up be KPMG so dont matter how nice or s***ty you are !!
