Installing New Hard Drive

Oops, I've gone and lost you, haven't I?

I was referring to the IMG file that is extracted when you download HDClone, and unzip it.You need to use some harddrive cloning software.
Try HDClone: http://www.miray.de/products/sat.hdclone.html#free
But, when you run the hdclone program, it asks if you want to create a disk etc...and it creates the floppy disk for you.
Then startup the computer with that floppy disk to clone the harddrive. Then completely disconnect the old drive, and Bob's your Auntie!
When I get the make and models of the drives, I will be able to help you with the jumpers in a flash.Everybody is equal; However some are more equal than others.0 -
Right, gone and found out a free program which will display some system information!
SIW (System Information for Windows): http://www.gtopala.com/
Download and run SIW - it's dead easy to use!
Look under hardware then Storage Devices - you'll see the make and model of the harddrives there. Should be something like Seagate, Maxtor (), Hitachi, Western Digital - just type in the full details of the harddrives (shown as Direct Access Devices in SIW) in here.Everybody is equal; However some are more equal than others.0 -
Thanks Basmic - you are very helpful and kind.
I've gone and put the old drive back in now and disconnected the new one - so back at the beginning. lol
If you're sure you've got time I would appreciate your help but from the start:
Step 1. - Unscrew back of pc ................0 -
Right I'll cover the basics - if you need clarification, just say the number of the step you're stuck on, and I'll ellaborate more if possible.
Before I wrote all the below, I forgot to ask you to check your motherboard make and model. Would do this with SIW standalone (link) please, and report the make and model in this thread? You need to look under Hardware > Motherboard in SIW.
1) Download and unzip HDClone (link) to it's own folder.
2) Go into the folder you unzipped HDClone and find the hdclone Application and run it. When it opens, click Create bootable medium.
3) It's up to you what you use here, but I might recommend a floppy disk - purely because of the fact that I'm not sure if your computer is recent enough to boot from CD or not. Only you are likely to know this.
In any case, click either of the Create floppy or Create CD/DVD buttons, and let it create an installation for you.
4) Unplug BOTH drives, unscrew them and remove them completely from the machine.
The drives should have their jumper settings written on top. If not, don't fear - just write down the make and model of the drives and post that information here. I can find out the jumper information fairly quickly, with the make and model of the drives.
5) Now we need to set the new 160gb drive as a Master, and the 10gb as the Slave. So use the jumper settings, when you get them!
6) Now the jumpers are set, put the drives back in the machine, plug the power and data cables in. The end of the data cable (ribbon cable, which is about 2 inches wide) should plug into the 160gb drive, and the middle should plug into the 10gb drive - naturally the other end will plug into the motherboard.
7) The first thing to do, literally as soon as your computer is turned on, is to enter the computer's setup/BIOS. Usually the computer will prompt you to press a key to enter the BIOS - such as, F1, F2, F8, F10, DEL or ESC (the DELete key is the most common).
8) Once you're in the BIOS, auto detect the drives. Sometimes there is an option to autodetect the drives. Sometimes you have to go into basic configuration, select the drive channel and tell it to autodetect - but the autodetect bit is usually found lurking in the BIOS.
9) Hopefully BOTH drives will be autodetected. If not, double check your cabling and jumper settings. If they were detected fine, save your settings and exit.
10) Once you exit the BIOS, insert the floppy disk/CD you created in step 3. Then startup the computer from the disk, and load HDClone.
Now I'm going to reboot my own computer, and check HDClone!Everybody is equal; However some are more equal than others.0 -
Thanks Basmic
I'll have to try a cd as I haven't got any floppy discs - hope that will be ok.
The new disc is a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 160GB ST3160815A Part No. 9CY032-305
And the old one is a Fujitsu MPF3102AT Part No. CAD5423-B84200TB
What do the jumper settings look like - so I know what to look out for?0 -
Motherboard Make and Model is:
Gigabyte Technology 7VKML version 1.x0 -
Right - am at step 4 now
Downloaded HD Clone to cd, and unplugged both drives
How do I find the jumper settings?
Thanks loaner - what do I use that for?0 -
This picture says more than I can - this is for the Seagate drive, BTW:
