I agree with thelurch who posted on the previous page.

I don't think we should ever be using barcode generators to change any coupons (let alone providing a link to such a site to complete strangers on t'internet. Just one dodgy person reading it may abuse it big-time and that could be the end of couponing!).

P.S. I know most of you aren't dodgy at all BTW (at least I THINK I know...!).

  • The barcode generator is for producing an exact duplicate of the barcode already on the coupon. The end result should look identical but with a clearer barcode.
My store now will not type in barcodes, and so will not accept them unless they scan.
    Now for the serious part
Made up barcodes should not scan even if you are "lucky" enough to get your £10 made-up coupon to scan, it's very likely the SA would be suspicious and call a supervisor, who would call HO and the manufacturer, you should then expect the police to be called.
Even if you do make it though the checkout undetected, it will be picked up by the cash office who know which till and what time it was accepted, 5 mins in the CCTV room will have you identified and watched/barred/caught when you are next back instore.
Some may think I am exaggerating or being dramatic but passing counterfeit tender is fraud and forgery, much more serious than photocopying (which in extreme cases could also lead to the above) and definately not worth risking for a few £ off your shopping.

    Tesco Brighouse trip report

I went in today armed with MOC, all of which were printed from the internet on a BW printer. The young lady cashier asked where they were from, and called a supervisor who took them and dashed off with them for a couple of minutes. He returned and stated that it was ok to scan 1 copy of each unique voucher - unless I`d actually purchased a product, in which case I could scan another voucher. Some vouchers didnt scan - they seemed to be the ones that had less clearly defined bar codes. The girl was most apologetic for the wait, to which I replied no worries, thank you. All in all it saved me £7.80 which paid for a couple of shoulder of pork joints, one of which is in the oven now, yum yum.
Many thanks to BM`s for putting me on to this, today was a good intro for this MOC virgin.

I agree with everything you are saying, the trouble is coupons do NOT look identical when you use a barcode generator.

I have seen several which used to be produced and publicised on PTS (www.paidtoshop.co.uk) and they never look 'identical' to the original because of small differences like a different font used for the barcode numbers. How do we know manufacturers aren't rejecting such mocs as defaced/altered (which they are of course)?

FWIW, on PTS they no longer show multisheets or altered mocs on the threads in order to avoid the possibility of rejected coupons bouncing back to the store unpaid, later on.

Couponers should ask the SA to type the numbers in, IMHO, and if your store won't allow that then don't use them. There are plenty more mocs out there. One of my locals doesn't allow any internet mocs at all but I still get by, using other coupons there instead and by buying lots of papers & magazines, & useful products with coupons on the packaging.

Finally, I know what you say is true, that a made-up barcode probably wouldn't work. But who is to say that unscrupulous people have to 'make up' a barcode? All they would have to do is copy a high value one they know scans (even if it was for a completely different product).

That's why I don't think we should be providing a link on this thread to a tool which could facilitate such abuse. Sorry, I can't see a good reason for the link to be on here.

  • I did a shop this morning at our friend Mr.T for £12.70 and only paid 14p. Got a lovely beef joint, that is in the oven as we speak. No problem with the Shackers coupon, only that the cashier had to punch the numbers in. Bless you all for my lovely dinner today without you I would have to have beans on toast:T:j:iloveyou:
  • Have just got back from my local Tesco (Bidston) which is one of the more lenient by the sound of things. Presented my bundle of legitimate coupons and was told very definitely they were only allowed to take 5 coupons per shop. I asked was this a new initiative and young chap said yes an e mail had been issued to stores. Is this just yet another single store manager decision or has anyone else heard of this?
  • Did a Tesco shop a couple of days ago and both the current OK (£1.50) coupon and the Thermacare (£2 from Best a month or so ago) coupon were blocked.

I wonder if some idiot has been using photocopies.
