carbs are things like potatoe, rice, pasta, white flour, sugar etc
proteins are meat, eggs, fish etc

i eat lowcarb so no i dont have carbs before a workout...unless u are doing MAJOR workouts i dont think u need to worry what u do or dont eat before or after... make a start see how u feel then go from there

    Hey Karen,

Not a total fitness freak myself, but I am training for a marathon so getting in lots and lots of running :D

On the subject of diet - just eat as you normally would - you body will tell you what it wants after a few sessions...

For example, if you do lots of exercise like running/rowing (cardio) - anything that gets your heart rate up you'll probably want carbs (potato, rice, pasta etc) to replace the used energy stores in your body.

If you do lots of weights and exercises like yoga you'll probably want protein because it helps rebuild muscles (I'm lucky that I run enough that I only have to sit-ups and small weights really).

But if you're 5 stone overweight I would recommend starting with some brisk walking - it burns loads of fat, tones you up and shouldnt make you too hungry that you eat more than you normally do.

Dont forget the fruit and veg though, but remember exercise isnt really about worrying about food - its about getting out there any ejoying it - as long as your getting the nutritents you need and are burning off slightly more calories than you're putting in then you will lose weight and tone up!

Oh and if you get a taste for running and or walking pop over to the running thread on DFW and join the gang :D

Ooo lucky you - I run 50 miles a week and although I'm a size 8 - I've still got curvy legs and bum - I wish I could get rid of them - they reduce my speed in races sadly :D

Perhaps less cardio and more something like dancing (salsa?) would be a good option - but I suspect most of what you're talking about is genetic so the best way would be to not do so much this time - it'll take longer but you should lose the weight more evenly...

It could well be that you are trying to achieve the impossible. How you look depends on your body shape. I am a classic apple with all my weight on my tummy and boobs, so I know I will never achieve an hourglass figure.

Personally, I go to the gym in the morning before work (although not this morning!) and always exercise on an empty stomach because it is so early. Then when I get to work I have a high fibre cereal. Works for me.

The hourglass figure is what i want, i'll prob only get it if i hire a personal trainer but as that is so expensive i doubt i'll be doing that very soon.

I agree with Tara! You look lovely whatever your size - but if you wan to exercise to lose weight then fine, but you wont change your shape too much (just get smaller on the same frame)...

And hourglass involves some flab, think:

That's Bellini's 'lady with the mirror' - an perfect hourglass example!
