If you can't afford 12 months, just tax your vehicle for 6 months. You will obviously pay a premium for this, but you can chalk it up as a lesson learnt.0

Thanks & I will start to buy car tax stamps if they sell them!!
You can be late, but you (stupidly) cannot use your car in the time in between even though the disc you will be buying will backdate your cover to the beginning of the month.
To be clear about being late, if you ask DVLA they will tell you that as long as you have purchased a tax disc within the first month after expiry then they will not bother you. They will also tell you - yes they do monthly checks, but they do not act on anyone until they are expired into the 2nd month (greater than 30 days if you like but obviously some months are 31 days and February 28 days).
Just be sure that the Post Office has a barcode scanner so the disc is valid immediately & make sure you use the official reminder notice that you have been sent - because that has your unique identifying barcode on it. Or if you have a new MOT and your Insurance policy is over 1 month old, you can do your tax app online.0 -

But as it's an offence to have an untaxed car on the highway, you could be fined for that too. To be absolutely sure of not being caught, you need to garage the car until you have recieved the new tax disc and placed it, in view, in the car.

Yes, you need the new computerised MOT certificate.
But it takes 5 working days to get a tax disc, if you do it online. It would be far quicker to get one over the counter at the Post Office.

you dont need to worry about a week dvla say you have about 2 weeks grace though we have always paid ours day before because we were always under impression we could not get to work in car if we didnt!!my next door neighbour was three months late with theirs it didnt seem to bother them! she reckoned she hadnt even noticed it was due!!!!! talk about insulting my intelligence!!!!!!!!!!! this is why the rest of us pay so much! they also hadnt even registered the car and theyd driven it for well over a year!
i would recommend you ring dvla for peace of mind as they are very helpful look at the dvla.gov website for a number and info. good luck!0 -
If you need to declare your car SORN, you can do it online at http://www.vehiclelicence.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/?SKIN=directgov0

gizmoleeds wrote:However, if you breach the T&Cs and this invalidates your insurance then you can be fined for driving uninsured.
My understanding was that yes your insurance may be invalidated at a time of claim, but the police can't do you for not being insured.
IIRC insurance companies have still had to pay out to a third party, but obviously not the 'insured' party. They then seek to recover the payout from the 'insured' party.
You sound like you work in the insurance business, so happy to be corrected - yet again!0
