Reanaults have the lower priced build quality, image & VW Audi have the 'German engineering image, built on lonnnnng ago, reputation.

    Neither are totally correct.

Renault do have their failings, with lower grade trim & some recurrent problems, but the German cars ain't what they once wer - not too many made in Germany, anyway!!

Check out http://www.honestjohn.co.uk clik the backroom clik Car By Car Breakdown, for all thats good AND bad, on EVERY car!!

Also clik Discussion & ask there.

Price guides & valutaions in https://www.whatcar.com are free, if on the high side.

& as no body else asked, what has drawn you to these 2 in particular? If you give an idea of your likes n dislikes, maybe some other vehicles may be suggested!

Nah, BMW is what you ( I mean I) want.

  • But BMWs come with a bad image attached. Like the modern day Capri drivers

Agreed, that's what put me off, but once you've driven one for a while then you start to appreciate how good they are. It's just one of those things you have to get over; about 1/3rd of BMW drivers are enthusiasts, a large proportion of the rest are the dreaded badge snobs.

Ok I'm not really concerned with image. Just want a decent run about for the school/activity run and getting me to and from work. I only do about 4000 miles a year as school is just over 2 miles away and DD usually on school bus, work is also 2 miles away too. I have a few trips up and down motorway for days out and visiting friends and that's it.

I currently have a Corsa (1.? GLS) which I've had since 1 year old (V reg) which has been great. I'm just finding as DD gets older I need more room now when ferrying her and friends about.

I fancied a Focus but OH hates them (he gets to drive different cars as part of his job and dislikes the Focus & 307s) so he won't look at those with me!! The garages around where I live don't seem to have a car I like in a colour I like (colour and cloth trim is important to me along with CD player).

Here is a list of cars I quite like as I think they meet my needs:
    1. Mondeo (if I can't have a focus:rolleyes: )
    2. Megane, scenic or laguna
    3. Picasso
I am quite tempted by buying a brand new Megane as they are quite cheap for a new car. Not tempted to buy new though of any of the others listed above.

As mentioned colour is important to me. Must be metallic & preferably siliver. It must have central locking and electric windows. I dislike cheap cloth trims and car must have CD player though I would of course compromise on this. The car must be reliable but this I understand is not guaranteed with any car. To date the most reliable car I ever had was a Ford. It didn't break down once in 8 years. My Corsa is also doing well. Not one breakdown yet but exhaust has been replaced a few times (probably different parts of it). It must not have a tendency to rust as my work car park is next to the beach. Size is not a problem as I'm an excellent parallel parker and can squeeze myself into most spaces (thank you God for PS).

The two cars mentioned are the only ones I've seen in the last week that I have liked. I think the Renault more meets my needs but my OH thinks otherwise.

I have driven an Audi before and loved it but it was many years ago. I've also driven BMW but didn't like it that much, thought Audi better.

Finally I don't care what my neighbours or friends think about my car. So long as I'm happy that's ok.

I've also just realised that this thread is in two places. I originally posted in wrong place and asked a BG to delete it. Obviously not happened. If BG reading can you please merge?

    Thanks for more info, Poppy.

As you're OK with your Corsa - have you looked at Astra?

Much cheaper than Focus - but no real street cred!

Theese are proving to be reliable & if you do have problems, not to much of a scare to get fixed!! Build quality is good & trim levels are pretty comprehensive - even Club spec gives air con, but avoid anything without it, it's pretty much expected 'extra' these days.

The one thing some people complain of, is the seats - depending on your tastes, you might not like the support - it was like having a fist in the centre of my back, when I drive them. This is cured with models with sports style seating.

If you were inclined, think about buying at auction - you'll get LOADS choice, in Motability sections at the sales. Ask again if you want more info, on this.

You'd be into under 20,000 mile examples 2002model Club 1.6, if you went to auction for £4000ish

    VB

At your budget, you'd get 2002 model easily, if you were to consider

Thanks for this Vanboy. The motability auctions sound good. Where are they held? I'm in South West Wales.

I will go and test drive an Astra today. I hadn't considered them as not many about here. More Meriva's which I don't like inside. Seats too boxy.
