    Thanks :D

One other thing which I got different answers to (from the two people I spoke to - think the other one was in India) was the date on which my service would begin (given that you don't know how long the post will take). The first girl said if I didn't use the SIM within seven days, the service would be cancelled. She said she didn't know when the bundle would begin.

The girl in Manila said the first month's bundle would begin the first time I made a call using the SIM.

Now I've logged in, I can see the bundle started on Monday - before I even had the SIM :)

As you are paying by direct debit it shouldn't really matter but, make sure you set up your virgin mobile voicemail service before your old number ports across. You do this by dialling 222 from the Virgin phone and listening to the nice lady's message.

Once you have gone through the set up process you should be able to access voicemail by pressing and holding "1" on your phone. If this doesn't work I can tell you how to manually add your voicemail number to the phone's settings.

thanks Dave - please can you explain a bit more about the significance of the timing (ie before the old number ports across)?

    many thanks

All I can say is that Virgin Mobile recommend that you set up your voicemail service before your number ports in - they actually say that it can be difficult to set up voicemail after a number port, if voicemail wasn't set up on the original number.

As you are paying by direct debit your voicemail number will not change after your number ports across, which is why it may not be a problem in your case. To be on the safe side I would activate your voicemail service by dialling 222 before your port date.

    Dave.

I am looking to change over from Vodafone PAYG to the £10 Virgin package and reading your voicemail paragraphs I just wanted to clarify in my head and ask another questions that I cannot find out from Virgin's website.

    1) I have already set up my Vodafone voicemail as I use this all the time, do I then have to set up Virgins voicemail before my porting my Vodafone number?

    2) You press 222 to set up your voicemail on Virgin, how do you turn it off? With Vodafone you can dial 1211 to turn on and 1210 to turn off. I do this when abroad or on holiday in the UK so I can see who's ringing before answering or cutting off without them leaving a message?

    3) Voicemail, on or off is pretty much instant with Vodafone, is voicemail with Virgin instant too?

    Thanks.

    Hi pimpers

I'm not Dave but have just switched from Orange to Virgin SIM-only on direct debit.

    1) I took Dave's advice and set up my Virgin voicemail beforehand. When I rang Virgin with my PAC, the girl asked me if I'd set up my Virgin voicemail too (confirming what Dave said).

What you have done with your Vodafone voicemail thus far has nothing to do with your new Virgin account, but it seems that if you don't set up your Virgin voicemail before porting your number in, you can experience problems.

    2) I asked the girl this and she said there were options to switch voicemail on and off when you dial 222. I haven't found them yet but I haven't looked properly either. By the way, 222 is the number for accessing your voicemail account, messages, settings etc - it only acts as the number to "switch it on" the first time you dial it.

    3) Sorry, I don't understand the question. Are you asking if the voicemail symbol appears as soon as someone leaves a message? If so, I'm pretty sure it does... I've had a few messages and by the time I've realised I've had a missed call, the voicemail symbol is there.

    Thanks for your reply Susey.

Vodafone voicemail - once this has been set up you can then for example go on holiday and if you do not want voicemail for two weeks, a week or a number of days, you can dial 1210 and this will turn off your voicemail service temporarily.

On return from holiday I dial 1211 and instantly I now have my voicemail service back again.

My last question is - once voicemail is set up with Virgin (dialing 222) can I do the same as above. choose to have voicemail as and when I like or is this service always on and cannot be switched off?

    Thanks.

Oh I see, question three was leading on from question two!

Well, I've just dialled 222 from my phone and can't see how to switch voicemail off, even though the girl in Customer Services said I could.

Just done a quick search on the Internet and it seems you have to do it by changing your phone settings (ie cancel all diverts). If you do this then it should be instant (I would have thought).

If you find another way, let me know.

    cheers
