Mostly you can't predict what the billing date will be. The first bill will usually be for a part month plus a full month. It might be worth asking the date before you make loads of calls; if the first period is only short you might go over the small pro rata allowance in the rush of the first couple of days.

    direct debit question,
as mentioned b4 you can't really tell what your bill cycle will be, but you can ask to change it at a later date so the money comes out at a more convient time.

I have now ordered my SIM, which has arrived. I initially did not want to port my number, as I still have credit on my Orange PAYG phone. I told the CS this when I ordered the SIM.

However, the handset my bf bought me for my birthday had to be purchased with a £10 Orange SIM. Having checked out the number on the new SIM it is much more memorable than the one I've been allocated by Virgin, so I've decided I want to port that over.

So, tonight I have asked Orange to transfer the £10 from the new SIM to the old (thereby keeping the £10 and the freebie texts attached to the old SIM). I then asked for the PAC for the new (now £0) SIM. The CS said she had disconnected it so I couldn't have the PAC!!! However - which was weird - when I asked her to reactivate it, she did straightaway, so it looks like she was panicking me over nothing (although it remains to be seen). Apparently I have to wait 24hrs for the £10 credit to go from one phone to the other and I can't order the PAC until then.

    Questions:

    - is it too late to port this number to Virgin? Although I have the Virgin SIM, I haven't put it into my phone and/or registered it via 789 or the website yet - but I have received literature with my new Virgin phone number on it

    - how long does it take to receive a PAC from Orange?

    - how long does it take Virgin to port a number?

    - am I already paying for the Virgin services, or do the services begin when I first register the SIM?

    TIA

If you order a new SIM only contract via the Virgin Mobile website they will automatically assign you a new number. If you want to transfer a number over then call your current provider and request a PAC, place your order with Virgin and when the SIM pack arrives call them with the PAC and the CS will give you your porting date.

Any credit on the orange SIM will probably be lost, when I ported from O2 I lost all credit on the account. You will probably have to get your handset unlocked unless it's a SIM free one.

no, not at all, you can port it when ever you want - today, tomorrow, next month next year

I'm sorry I don't know this answer - i do know if it was from virgin they could give it you over the phone
how long does it take Virgin to port a number?

two working days from the day you give them the PAC
am I already paying for the Virgin services, or do the services begin when I first register the SIM?

your minutes & texts will be on the sim now so you are in effect paying for them now

Thanks so much for your help. Sorry about this but I have some further questions now...

    - as I'm paying for the texts and minutes now, should I call 789 to register the SIM and register online? It would be good to be able to see how many texts and minutes I have left...

    - if I register online and then change my number, how do I log in afterwards?

    - how do I know when my number has been ported - will Virgin text me or something?

you are welcome. & no need to apologise

you can call 789, if you are set up on direct debit for your sim only though, it should all be registered for you already...its always worth checking though

in the same way..once you are registered online you just need your email address & password to log in.
    - how do I know when my number has been ported - will Virgin text me or something?

this is one thing I won't be much help with i'm afraid. its just a case of checking your sims & waiting on the day of the port i'm afraid.

make sure you use up all your airtime on your old network, airtime as a rule is not refundable

    Thanks :D

I've just registered online and all seems to be OK. It says my refresh date is 26th February and I have 300 minutes and 500 texts left, so I'll start using it now :D I'm assuming this means on 26th Feb any remaining minutes and texts are wiped off and I start again with 300+500?

Thanks for the tip re using up airtime - I thought that would be the case, so I transferred my unused airtime to the SIM/number I want to keep :D There's £0 on the one I want to port (or there will be within 24 hours - I'll check this has been done before I ask for the PAC).

Cool, so I'm assuming that's when my bill will be calculated as well...

The people in the call centre in Manila (!) need to be updated - I'd read (on these very forums) that the rollover had stopped, but the girl in Manila said they'd roll over...
