    Hi all,

Just Giving Site is up now for the Great North Run 2009..

    Link can be found here..

Still need to find some pictures for it, and to make a more informed write up. As i dont have any pictures of myself running / after events, i might struggle.

Something like this will not do..

Alias, I didn't have any pictures of me running, either, so went with the same standard pic you have used. I did put quite a bit of spiel in the text bit though, and that got some nice comments from people who visited the page, so I think that did me more good than any running picture would have done me!

Good luck with your fundraising - I know you will hit your target x

    Hi Mascot,

Well the starting point for this training was last September, being 4 stone overweight and struggling to run a mile in 12 minutes.

However, I do have some advantage from 'muscle memory' from running done over many years!:D

Wow, that is seriously amazing. I thought you had been 'in training' for years.

I have started jogging a couple of miles three times a week and am on my thrid week but have developed 1) a nasty blister on the back on one foot and 2) a really sore side on my left knee. Any suggestions on what I can do to get rid of them apart from drugging myself up please?

    Hi!

I've been lurking for a couple of months now and thought I'd pluck up the courage to join in. I started running in February, after shedding some weight in the first half of last year then doing some general exercising. Hopefully doing it the right way... I got fitted for shoes in a shop, then bought last years verson on line for half price and got a free wicking t-shirt - very MSE. And a technique Becky recommended since I think :) More recently got some sorbothane insoles (I got 5-6 for 6.5 size shoes BTW as I think someone asked and they've been fine) based on the advice on this thread.

As mentioned, I had some general fitness already, but have worked up to running much longer non-stop distances over the last couple of months. Avoided run-walk based on advice here and seem to have come through unscathed (so far). My furthest now is 7.4 miles in 77 mins. Not fast compared to some of you but I was dead chuffed - was one of those runs where it all felt good too - even with the sun and the last mile where I was really feeling it. Was able to do a 4 miler 2 days after with no ill effects too. I don't seem to have much of a range of speed so I think that is something I need to work on.

Anyway, I did something a bit daft and entered a half marathon at the end of September... However I'm confused by training plans online. The (sorry no links as a new poster ) runwindsor one doesn't have runs that are all that far IMHO, whilst one on a site called Jeff Galloway with runners aiming for certain times has a max. long run of 17 miles but only another 90 mins running per week with a walk and a long run and no apparent speed training... Would anyone be prepared to offer some guidance? I'd kinda like to do the race distance in training for my own peace of mind but not if it is really going to cause me issues.

I'm also confused by the advice to try and keep 4 miles as a base unit of runs. I can't do that in 20/30 min runs as listed in some training plans. Happy to do hour long lunchtime runs - but concerned that would deviate too much from some plans.

Thanks for any advice - and a belated congrats to all recent racers. Very inspiring - hence my being brave/daft and entering a race!

It is certainly not daft you doing a half marathon based on what you have said in your thread!!

I am sure rich will give you some great advice soon - he is the guru around here - the rest of us just do what we are told :rotfl:

7.4 miles in 77 mins is pretty quick though - I'd be happy with that on my runs!!

    Thanks Hypno.

I'm not unhappy with 77 mins for that distance and (the last mile aside) was comfortable churn out some miles, but my 4, 5, and 6 mile runs all seem at similar paces regardless of distance. Also not sure that I have an easy, medium, and fast pace right now. More a one size fits all :rotfl:

(sorry about length of first post there - rambled on more than I intended)

krider, if you go back to my first posts, you will see that whatever the distance and effort I tried to put in, I was guaranteed to go at 11 min miles! So I know where you are coming from!

rich and becky will do you a plan that includes speedwork and hills etc for the half marathon and you will see your times tumble, I'm sure!

Welcome Krider... just relax and look forward ton the first 1/2 :D...and you have to tell us where it is so rich can add you to the Race list :D..

anyways you are doing fine for your goals.. i just started at the turn of the year and just done my first half.. so time wise you have loads of time... and due to injury i never got close to the distance apart from in the last few weeks.. if you can take your long run to 10m you will get though the 1/2 marathon i would say the excitment of the day would get you to the finish ( with a steady start of casue ).. but its allways better to get the distance under your belt for confidence.. and it was only the week before my 1/2 that i got to 12m distance.. still 1 odd mile short but was as close as close. Even if you just take your long run up by 1m per month you will be on target :).

With the injury my core work was around 6m 3 nights a week and 10m on a sunday.. :).. seemed to see me though.

no doubt Rich will be along at somepoint to help you out more... but got to run...... :D

Floxxie I'm also new to running - all of three weeks, although I was upping my walking before that. When I started running I was getting a pain at the bottom of my knee and shin and I found that walking for half an hour before running warmed up my legs sufficiently in preparation for the run. Since I've started walking as a warm up I no longer get the pain. As for blisters could it be your socks or shoes? I
