Tesco or Asda? Which is cheaper?

Just seen this thread and it's funny as we did our shopping in Tesco this morning (i was picking up a printer bought online)... and i thought it would be better prices.. so I would say ASDA is cheaper or at least i think they have more special offers...

I would have to say asda is cheaper , I can't belive how much my tesco shop has increased but I am finding more & more I am picking up bargins in other shops.
but I can't stand the asda v's tesco add on tv.

I've used mysupermarket.co.uk lately to double-check whether my baskets are cheaper with Asda or Tesco, and Asda won for me by a significant margin. However, if Morrison's did an online shop, I'd probably go with them, because their offers seem to suit my cooking needs better i.e. more multi-buys on cooking ingredients rather than 2-4-1 on junk which T and A seem to do

Without coupons, Asda are cheaper on the whole.

However, if you use a lot of coupons, Tesco become far cheaper due to their nice coupon policy.

We buy mostly smart price/value products, but a few brand named products and I think asda and tesco are pretty close in terms of price. We shop equally at both - Asda being walking distance from work and OH working at Tesco. I think Asda do better offers in general. Often I've called OH to get him to check the cost of something (eg they did 24 cans for £5 recently at asda) and Asda usually works out better even with the 10% discount.

I find Asda's to be much cheaper than Tesco, I tend to shop online and get it delivered so that I stick to my budget better! and like helping_hubby, I do buy quite a lot of smart price products - spent £110 for family of four for 3/4 weeks shopping - we cook mostly from scratch all the time and it goes really far if you watch what you buy - only things we do buy brand named are kenco coffee and the ones you can't avoid like sugar. everything else is smartprice or asda's own brand.

Although it would help if they remembered to deliver everything! twice they have forgotten to deliver all of the frozen foods I ordered. :mad:

Whichever is closer for me; When im at my flat, Tesco is a mile down the road, Asda is about 5 miles down the motorway. When I am at my girlfriends, Asda is a mile down the road, Tesco is about 12 miles away.

The difference in the price of an overall shop between the two, is so small, it is not worth visiting one over the other, just best to go to the nearest/most convenient at the time.

I do prefer Somerfield to both, more pleasent shop (don't see many parents treating the supermarket is a creche/day out for the kids), less busy, much more friendly and helpful staff, and just as good pricing, but the main problem is size of store limiting their selection of stock and opening hours, which is why I end up at Tesco or Asda on most occasions.

If you save Tesco clubcard points and use them on a 'deal' you get four times the value so I get 130 quids worth of RAC cover for 30 odd quid, and the vouchers are valid for a number of years.

By the way, I buy mainly Tesco Value/Asda Smart Price products, and very few branded things (im don't care whether im keeping up with the Jones' or not, just so long as the food is nice and im happy with it), so this may be why I see very little difference in the price.

Interestingly, I buy more branded stuff when I go to Somerfield, not because they have less non-branded stuff, they have plenty of their "Simply" stuff, but they seem to have more offers on the few branded things that appeal to me.

Yeah, thats one massive bonus of Tesco over Asda, their Clubcard. I spend so little, I only get about £2.00 every quarter in vouchers, but its better then the big fat zero you get from Asda, because I buy petroleum-diesel during the winter months instead of Biodiesel, hopefully, I should have more coming my way, although the local Shell just down the road from me has been consistently the cheapest petrol station on Wirral for some weeks now, by around 2p per litre over Tesco, so I have been going there instead.
