Tesco or Asda? Which is cheaper?

Might sound as if this has come out of the ministry for stating the blinding obvious but I have come to the conculsion that you are paying for the tesco clubdeals through slightly higher prices.

I would say ASDA is cheaper than Tesco.....unfortunately OH hates Asda for some reason so we tend to go to Tesco

I used to shop at asda, switched to tesco as i like the place but i have switched back to asda with lidl stock ups. i went around the supermarkets with a notepad to see which was cheaper for my weekly shop. Asda and lidls are pretty much on par with eachother, lidls fruit and veg is cheaper though. Tesco don't come out too well on my shop but i still go now and again and use coupons that i've saved up. I'm not anti tesco though i love the place it's a day trip out for me as it's huge!
Mysupermarket.com is the place to type in all your shopping and it tells you which one is cheaper for your shop, tesco is always £10 more than asda for me. HTH

Well, according to the latest Tesco TV commercials it does. Quite meaningless, really, unless we get to know what precisely was in the baskets.

The Grocer magazine has found Asda to be the cheapest supermarket ten years in a row I believe, and the magazine needs to be seen to be impartial if they are to be credible. Tesco used to have a strict Asda price match policy but this seems to have been dropped in the past six months - even the price check on the Tesco website seems to have been relegated from the front page... Not sure how the discount stores can consistently be on a par with Tesco and Asda, given they are each less than a tenth of the size of the two big stores. That gives them a lot lower buying power. Yes they can offer cheap prices occasionally, but long term the brands most people buy will tend to be cheaper in Asda.

It depends on your basket of shopping completely as to which will be cheaper - for me it's Asda, I used to think Tesco was better\cheaper too.

If a Tesco is near you, it would not surprise the one bit if the new boy in town reduced their prices significantly to entice curious folks who want to compare and not surprisingly find it is cheaper -for a while.

Went in Asda last week, first time in years. I think Morrisons is now cheaper. I shop at Morrisons because it is close and used to think Asda was very cheap. I guess you get used to your regular.

I have just defected from Tesco to Asda, purely on the prices. Tesco is closer to my home, but I occasionally went to Asda for a bit of variety. Noted my shop was generally £20 cheaper on the Asda weeks - then just before the New Year I did what I believe will be my last Tesco shop for a while. Prices substantially up all over the store, so put a basket of shopping (mix of Value/ Smartprice and brands) into Mysupermarket and confirmed that, for my shop, Tesco is over 20% more!!

I have to agree with the discussion of see who is doing the best deals on the things you want to buy and go there to stock up.
With me there are some ASDA own brand stuff that I like and can't be beaten so have to visit once a month (a bit like onetomany said) but all the other supermarkets are more convent to me so I choose them together with Lidl and Aldi.

Our Tesco is not to pleasant to visit as all tills are very crowded and the customer service desk is one long queue.

I shop online with Tescos but have shopped in person in Asda and been really impressed with the prices so was really excited to see that Asdas now deliver in my area. But I've done a quick compare on a typical basket for us through my supermarket.com and was suprised to see Tescos coming out cheaper. I think this is because most of my basket is Tesco own brand and I would need to try and see what Asda own brand products we like and tweek the basket a bit.
I will probably give it a go anyway! Nothing ventured, nothing gained.;)
