Surely working for the NHS is about as safe as it gets. Third biggest employer in the world (after Indian Rail Company and the Chinese Armed forces) approaching 1.4 million employees

    (The pensions quite good too)

    Not any more.

I think my job in the NHS is fairly secure but medical redundancies have already happened. Plus there's no guarantee there will be any consultant posts when I've finished my higher specialist training.

Medical redundancy: I'm sorry but there are going to be cut backs - that leg will have to go.

My SHO has taken all his MRCS exams but is having to do ST2 for the 3rd time this year as there are barely any SpR posts in colorectal surgery open at present apparently. It makes him a pretty miserable person to work with as he's frustrated all the time. Although saying that, he is still employed and earning. Must be very very frustrating and upsetting though.

I'd say public sector is safest.

Safe for now, but the debt will need to be paid back and that it likely to lead to big cuts in public spending. 2010/11 and beyond are likely to be hard times for those in the public sector.

I suspect that 2011 will see the big squeeze start as the next Comprehensive Spending Review will kick in. Also, we may have seen private sector employment pick up by then so it will be more acceptable to throw public sector workers onto the dole.

I always think the guys who move and monitor the control rods in reactors are pretty secure and when you think about it they could demand a big wage.
  • I work for the jobcentre. They can't seem to take staff on fast enough here.

I reckon I will be really busy.

I work in mental health (well, one of my jobs!). I can see a massive surge in people requiring my help!
Thought processes can be managed positively, so that they help you to achieve what you want, rather than hindering your judgement.
