Well I just spoke to Barclays on the phone. As I wanted to see if they had applied for a current account rather than a cash card, I simply asked why I was declined for an account. The first agent said that I had not applied for any current accounts and asked if it was a cash card account. I said it may have been and she put me through to the cash card team. He asked straight away if I was bankrupt and I said yes. He said it was not a problem and that I would just need to apply again but send proof of my bankruptcy. Not sure why!?! I don't recall anyone else mentioning this on here. Anyway, I thought I would clarify about having existing debts with Barclaycard and he said it definitely wasn't a problem. Strangely, he also said he couldn't find my application but it appeared on my credit report as a current account check.

So I will pop along to the bank in a bit and ask for a paper form and get them to certify my ID whilst I'm there. See what happens...

I went for the Co-Op one as didn't have the time to venture down to my local Barclays.
I incidentedly ran off my Experian report the following day and it just shows as a "Identification: generic check".
So its just an ID one for the Co-op, would imagine it would be the same for Barclays

I got the ID - generic check for Co-op but a current account search for Barclays (this made me think that the adviser had applied for a normal current account (although this now seems like that was not the case - see above).

i found that stung too much and the wife didnt like the taste

Yes....for those with quite nasty digestive illnesses such as ulcerative colitis and Crohns....where they need to use this sort of medication - they will be wetting themselves at that comment.

I'm in that group and it wasn't funny. Unthoughtful would be closer.

Same goes for the original comment that prompted the above response.

what makes you think i havent?...................;)

At the time of applying for the Barclays account in December, the Experian credit report showed no signs of bankruptcy or any or missed payments on any of my accounts. Nor did it show any adverse information such as CIFAS or GAIN. Today it shows my bankruptcy. Having just checked my Equifax credit report today, there is no mention of bankruptcy or any CIFAS information.

Barclays was a creditor in my bankruptcy. I applied the day after my banklruptcy. At that time I had missed one payment by a few days on one account and I was over my limit by £100 on another account. All payments up to this point were in good order. I am on the electoral register and my driving licence matched my address.

As I seem to be the only one declined, I'm wondering if the staff member processing my application put through a normal current account instead? She was doing the hard sell on me and I explained to her that I had gone bankrupt so I was only eligible for a basic account. I wonder if she thought she'd just try a normal account to see if it would be accepted? Thinking back, she didn't really seem to know what she was doing as she was flicking back and forth through the screens.

I've got the Co-op account and I'm quite happy with it to be honest. The only thing that bothers me a little is the Electron card but it's only been a problem when buying a rail ticket so far.

I would say reading that then it is highly likely that she did put you through for a proper account and not a Cash account. Give them a ring and ask. Then go and try again in branch

Edited to say just read your update :D Good luck.

Sorry it upset you, but I think making fun of brand name is a way off from laughing at people with serious conditions.

    No offence intended.

    Well back on topic...

Just went into the local branch of Barclays and asked them to verify my ID and get a paper application. As they didn't have paper applications she said she could try putting it on the system again so I agreed. I thought now that my bankruptcy would appear on my credit files, there might be more of a chance of it being accepted!

There were no records of me as a former customer. My two previous credit card accounts seem to have vanished - although that hasn't stopped Barclaycard calling me several times a week. So the adviser input my details as a new customer and went through all the screens before the computer said no.

There were four reasons on the system for the decline:
    1. Unemployed (apparently this is what will come up for current accounts which will then default to offer a cash card account).
    2. CCJ (which I don't have and have never had - I have checked this on Experian and Equifax in case there is an error somewhere - neither show any indication of any court or fraud etc. Only Experian shows the bankruptcy at the moment).
    3. Bankrupt (which apparently isn't a problem for a cash card account)
    4. Failure to meet account policy (adviser said it was to do with the above).

So they've agreed that something isn't right and are going to try and open the account on 'the old system'. If that doesn't work then they will get a paper copy posted from another branch and I will send it off to be processed.
