I can't see anything there about Barclays closing or going bust in the next few days - there should be plenty of time for you to get your PIN Sentry and transfer out some money to bring you within the £50K limit.
Saying that, I am sure the government has, although not specifically lifted the £50K limit, insisted that no savers will lose money. e.g http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article4905923.ece
So just chill out, be thankful that Barclays are protecting your security, and wait for your pin sentry to arrive - or as suggested above, use your hubbies.
And really, thinking about it, the £50K limit has been well publicised for a long time, so you should really have sorted this before - it was £35K before Northern Rock so it seems you have actually left it until you think Barclays might be doing badly to transfer the money out.0 -
I really doubt Barclays will go under any time soon, and even if they were to go bust then people like the OP withdrawing all their money will surely not help matters.
Oh well.0 -
I was not withdrawing all my money... just sufficient to comply with advice publicised.ShelfStacker wrote: »I really doubt Barclays will go under any time soon, and even if they were to go bust then people like the OP withdrawing all their money will surely not help matters.Irene0 -
I would, but the option is not there to proceed. :rolleyes:or as suggested above, use your hubbies.
I don't know about your bank accounts, but ours change with in/outflows. Recent inflows increased the overall balance to a level which required some action. It was not necessary to "sort it out before".And really, thinking about it, the £50K limit has been well publicised for a long time, so you should really have sorted this before - it was £35K before Northern Rock so it seems you have actually left it until you think Barclays might be doing badly to transfer the money out.Irene0 -
I just find it unbelievable really that there are customers that ignore several prompts regarding PINsentry months before the system goes live that is actually there to protect peoples money and reduce fraud.
While this may be true for Barclays, for Tesco Internet Saver, there is no information given about the requirement for a card reader UNTIL THE PAYMENT IS ATTEMPTED!
Fairness to Barclays they sent my parents each a PINsentry for their single joint account, but I don't think they had any messages to click on, they were sent automatically before the online banking system even mentioned the new system!0 -

Other than that you can go into your local branch and they may be able to give you a PINsentry reader if you need it urgently.
Other than that I have no need to justify my position within Barclays to you.
Sorry, but there were no prompts for ordering - the system was a roll-out, with the first units going to Premier customers and then customers with high numbers of online transactions. Eventually it should have hit every customer, but some customers haven't received it if they either access their online banking infrequently or make no transfers. They will usually still be on "traditional" online banking, as will be third parties such as powers of attorney etc.
Young pensioner, if your husband has one, then you can start using his as soon as you start getting prompts online. If you haven't got the prompts yet and need to act quickly, you can call the Online Banking Helpdesk on 0845 600 2323 (or 02476 842 063 if you'd prefer) who should be able to enable it for you. Also be aware that there is a £10,000 transfer limit per day for online banking with PINsentry, so you might want to visit a branch, write a cheque etc. if you want to get a larger sum moved in one go.What would William Shatner do?0 -

Very many thanks for your reply, BarclaysManager. It is much appreciated.
It's very annoying when people assume that because we're over 60, we don't know our right from our left!
My online banking is not yet prompting for PinSentry when I log in. Although once I am there, it does now say that my account has been 'upgraded' to PinSentry. Naturally, I sincerely hope that Barclays remains stable in this difficult time, but I must admit that it did give rise for concern yesterday when I couldn't move funds and after hearing the announcements on the news.

These PIN SENTRY things are fairly common now, I'm surprised anyone would be unaware of them. I have them for Nationwide, Bank of Scotland, and Barclays and in all cases they were sent to me without having to be requested0

They certainly are. I have one for my RBS account, but I have never been approached by Barclays. These PIN SENTRY things are fairly common now, I'm surprised anyone would be unaware of them. I think the post by BarclaysManager explains very clearly how this has occurred.Irene0 -

They're all the same as well, in the sense they use the same APACS standard - you should be able to switch them out and use them for any bank. I have never tested a non-Barclays card in a Barclays reader, but I do have a Natwest reader that my partner uses.
I prefer the ones that RBS Group and Nationwide use, they clearly have a common manufacturer. They're smaller and more curved than ours, which better suits the whole idea of making them less hassle, I think - easier to keep in your jacket pocket or whatever. What would William Shatner do?0
