If someone phoned barclays and transfered money from your account just using your date of birth and mothers maiden name would you be happy? thought not, its there for security to protect you and money lost from banks.

They wouldn't not let you transfer money you just don't have the right amount of security, they have third party transaction limits and are bringing in first party transaction limits in soon to so you need a pass code or online banking to transfer in between accounts.

Again though this is for your security and not to stop you taking money elsewhere.
It was not a telephone transaction which I was trying to make. I am registered for On-line banking, which I have been using for some considerable time.

I have not been invited to use PinSentry before. Would you not be alerted by such an action, after the announcements yesterday?

I think the fact is that if the security device is required, it should be automatically sent out, rather than the customer being informed only when they attempt to make the transaction.
    Thank you, withnell.
    My sentiments entirely. ;)

My girlfriend is a Barclays customer, and she has had a PIN sentry for months - it is strange you haven't got one.

When I tried to move money out of my RBS account online it came up saying I needed a card reader. I didn't have one. I ordered it. It arrived 5 days later. Et voila.
More security = More happy customer!

I presume that the transaction you tried to perform was not an urgent one?

So you should have seen an announcement months back which stated that if you are making regular transfers from your account then you will have automarically been sent a PINsentry reader, I also believe there was a prompt to order one if you had not already received one automatically. Obviously you chose to ignore this message.

We have one for my husband's Barclays account.

I was suprised that they didn't seem to require me to have one for mine...
another reason for my concern yesterday.

How come you are only a personal banker StAnToN?

Your promising attitude should have elevated you to managerial status by now, surely.

Barclays are lucky to have you! And you, them!

I just find it unbelievable really that there are customers that ignore several prompts regarding PINsentry months before the system goes live that is actually there to protect peoples money and reduce fraud.

Other than that you can go into your local branch and they may be able to give you a PINsentry reader if you need it urgently.

Other than that I have no need to justify my position within Barclays to you.

I have never received any communcation whatsoever, so I'll thank you for not making such uninformed remarks. If you were a well informed Personal Banker, you would know for certain - not believe.

I would certainly not ignore a message of that nature.

OH and I both bank with Barclays, we regularly live and/or work abroad and I had been feeling quite left out because Barclays had never offered us the pinsentry.

I am now back in the UK, having moved back from the US late last summer, and have started setting up new accounts for bits and pieces: gas, electric, etc. The first time I tried to set up a new payee I was told I couldn't do it, I needed a pinsentry. Great, I thought, more security. It arrived within days, only a few, I can't remember exactly how many.

OH hasn't made any changes to his Barclays account, he is now in France and still mainly using a US bank account, therefore, no need for pinsentry.

I think Barclays have been great to us, they react swiftly to any change of address and circumstance. Have been flexible with a mortgage we took out (for a house we have rented out on two occasions whilst living abroad) without varying any of their terms. Even transfers into our US account have always gone smoothly.

I know delays can be annoying, trust me I've been there, but really security in this day and age is a good thing.
If anything I say starts to make sense, PANIC!

    just a few things

-all the pinsentry device are the same so you can use your husband's or Nationwides or RBS's etc

    - without a pinsentry you were restricted to £1,000 transfer per day but with it you can transfer up to 10,000..

-you can of course write out a cheque and transfer the money that way.

    - many banks are / have introduced these devices to improve security.

-barclays did send out quite a lot of information about theses some time ago
    maybe you missed the info
