Ive worked in government departments ( both local & national) and OH works in central depts as a temp ( eg defra/ home office/ FCO etc)
I regualrly worked a 60+ hour week in local government and so did my colleagues. there was not a single one of us that clocked off at 5.30. Most of us regualrly worked weekends (unpaid, unrecognised)
Oh does his 9-5 because there is not the budget to pay him to stay to do the overtime. He reckons theres at least 2 hours work to do every day that he has no time to do.
I love how many people seem to think that wiorking for the state is some big doss. I have much more time on my hands now working a 50 hour week for a private company than I ever did working for the government. Its like a walk in the park compared.
Stupid woman, I bet you got 'overlooked' when promotion was available.
Do the honest thing and go on the sick 3 months out of 12. It's the civil service way. !!!!!!-spiral your way up.0 -
Yes but how much of the work was unnecessary?
some of it was unneccesary ( ie logging information twice on 2 different databases due to laws on data sharing)
But I could have worked 24 hours a day 365 and never had enough time to do the work I had to do. Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
my sis works in LG too, and has been told that they have to downgrade thier cars to get mileage. She uses the bus anyway for her work rounds. but some of her colleagues have been told thier cars cant be used for mileage any more as they are too ineficcient and they need a small car ( eg micra) they have allstarted usiung the bus ( and cabs) as they can no longer use thier own cars. the bus is more expensive.
What a disgrace.
Why dont they enquire on esential car user alowences?
(this is when you get paid a small amount each month no matter the mileage then get a reduced millage allowence.
I agree as with all things poor performance starts from the top and works its way down,
"the diarrea effect" I call it:D0 -
Failed Minister who could not hack government decides to blame his staff. Well, there's a surprise.Politics is not the art of the possible. It consists of choosing between the disastrous and the unpalatable. J. K. Galbraith0

To tell you the truth he was on the radio last night. One of his ex staff text him said he had loads of stuff doing stupid jobs for him.
But obviously they are a waste of time if you dont work there any more.;)0 -
Let's see .. Digby Jones... he was a government minister / advisor for a while... don't remember reading how he halved the staff in his own department.
Easy talk when you no longer can do anything about it.0 -
i worked for a govt dept for 3 years, regularly worked 50-60 hours a week too, worked more saturdays and sundays than i ever have worked in the private sector.
of course if i had wanted to take the p!ss i could have done. there are people sitting there in a very secure job, doing no tangible work at all, but they are the exception not the rule, in my experience.
one of the major problems in the civil service is that it is unable to recognise the fact that if you pay !!!!!! you get !!!!!!. they definately need fewer staff, but they need different, more experienced and able (and hence better paid) staff in those reduced number of positions. without that sea change it will always be a financial abyss.
they need to sort out their stupid budgeting rules as well, which encourage waste.0 -
