8 years ago me and my then partner went to the local Blue Cross after much thought to get a rescue dog. We had always wanted a Springer but decided to look at a rescue dog of any breed first.
There was a beautiful dog aged 8 called Jason who was kind of like a baby Alsation (possibly not an Alsation but similar, can't quite remember). His owner had died and he was lovely. My partner was (and still is ) a teacher with lots of holidays. We had the garden fenced and I worked part time in the mornings so any dog, after a settling in period would only be alone for around 5 hour maximum during term time, with someone all weekend and with someone all day in the school holidays.
This wasn't good enough and we were told unless someone was permanently at home we couldn't even meet Jason outside his pen, let alone walk him, get to know him etc....and that we couldn't have any other dog....it was so sad as we had so much love and time for a dog.
So, we decided to get a puppy Springer from a local breeder and Charlie became part of our lives aged 8 weeks. He will be 8 in the summer and has had a very pampered and loved life. Even though we spit nearly 6 years ago, we made the decision that Charlie would live with my ex to keep him settled and I have daily access to him for one of his walks, 7 days a week. It's a weird arrangement, but it works and Charlie has always been top of our list of priorities even though we aren't together.
Just a shame that the Blue Cross didn't initially think this enough when we were still together and looking."Stay Wonky":D

Hence, I'm not allowed to keep animals in the flat under the terms of my tenancy agreement, but I would if I didn't live in such a built up and over-looked property.
100% honestly, being able to rescue a couple of dogs is the main (well possibly the only) reason that I actually want to buy a property of my own!
Have you actuallly asked your landlord if you could have a dog? Our tenancy agreement says the same and we just asked the landlord if we could have pets and they said sure, as long as there is no trace of them when we leave the house or they will have to deduct it from our deposit. May be worth a try? Some people feel the rain...others just get wet0 -
Piggles, there must be a rescue near you and they are probably crying out for dog walkers or even socialisers (people who just talk and play with them) - give a few a ring and ask if they need anyone to help out (at times that suit you). At least you will have the company of the dogs and be able to help them into their forever homes.0

Just stopping in to say well done hethmar. Great charity you've got there. I have put a post on my companies intranet about this as lots of dog lovers here. Hopefully my colleagues will start sending you stamps. May even be able to persuade my manager to sent all company mail stamps too
Keep up the good work. Refreshing to know there's people like you still out thereThis is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.0 -
Thats very kind of you
To be honest, I personally do very little. The rescue does not have its own kennels and there is a core of members local to the pound but the rest of us are all over the country. New members are very welcome indeed
