I'm sure I'm not the only one on here who does a reasonable amount of travel for work, and I detest using Heathrow. The place is a nightmare, flights are delayed, they queue for half an hour to get to a runway for take-off, they stack for half an hour to get a landing slot.

I've used it once and wont do again. Even with a 3rd runway. I can use the excellent hub at Schipol instead for international. For european I've got a choice of direct flights from liverpool or manchester.

The rest of the world has moved on, if we don't want to be left behind, then we have to move forward as well

this is the part I dont get. Surely what is likely to happen is that some flights will be canned off as there are simply not enough customers to fill the planes0 There are vanishing routes all over the place and this is due to lack of demand! I can no longer fly direct from the UK to caracas, but HEY- who cares.

I refuse to accept this hub stuff. If I live in mancester and want to fly to caracas, then an hour to heathrow is no different to an hour to schipol. let another country deal with the expense, the congestion, the noise, the pollution.

all leisure flights should be taken out of peak time flying to allow slots for others ( eg you do not need to fly at 8.30 am to cancun, its a holiday destination a few hours later is fine to arrive there)

  • I suspect the main jobs gained will be the 'jobs for the boys' that the big contractors etc will have got due to their political connections.

If we really do need extra capacity, why can't it be done elsewhere? Birmingham International is little more than an hour from Euston on the Pendolino - I live in London but it's actually quicker for me to get there than to Heathrow!

At least this does show us that the government's supposed committment to 'green' issues is just lip service...

especially as I suspect its cheaper to demolish part of birmingham where the prices are cheaper than Surrey & surrounds?

think the problem is you need one major hub airport

so it could be either Heathrow or somewhere else in the Country....however if it was somewhere else then most flights would then move to the other airport and Heathrow would shrink

I don't think it's so much about 'us' as 'them' - people doing business want to fly into London, that's where the financial centre (hohoho) is, that's where everything is geared up for.
Many of our clients stay in Central London and get taxis out to the our office (Camberley) every day - they don't want to be anywhere other than London if they have to come to the UK, and the certainly don't want to fly into Birmingham and get on a train down to London. (Although I agree, and always try to use Birmingham whenever I can as Heathrow is such a pain)

Erm, isn't that the whole point?! LHR is COMPETING with the likes of Schipol etc (fairly badly at the moment). Hubs support feeder routes that are not otherwise viable as stand alone point-to-point routes.

From a personal/enviro point of view, I probably wouldn't want to see a 3rd runway (TG I no longer work for BAA so I can admit that lol) but you can't blame 'em for wanting to protect/grow/improve the business.

With the way things are going i think the third runway at heathrow will be a good thing as it will create jobs, I know its not enviromentally friendly but with all the jobs going in manafacturing, retail and construction this can only be good for people who have no work, due to their professions disapearing.

People still have to pay bills, so i say bring on the the third runway, and lets create some jobs for the people out of work.

    What do you people think#????

It's a terrible thing: it would be done at a huge cost to the environment (despite the way this 'government' is trying to eel its way out of this aspect, in its characteristic way); it would mean 200 houses would be be destroyed in order to build it; Heathrow Airport is already far too big and a horrible dive for passengers to have to cope with; the 'government' is steam-rollering through the huge opposition there is to this proposal; residents of a large area would suffer massive noise pollution if this s**t was built; the jobs would probably all go to economic migrants anyway rather than to born and bred Brits.

We are supposed to be reducing air travel, not increasing it!

what, so are you truly saying you want people to fly from say sweden or other parts of EU to london to connect to fly out of london to the likes of caracas? so there is "demand" created?

Are you truly saying you want the UK to compete on having higher emissions so we have to pay higher taxes to the EU for the privilidge?

"hubs" dont create that many more jobs, the odd baggage handler? The extra costa coffee people? Do me a favour- our losses on aircraft emissions taxes alone will dwarve these? Surely?

My complaint about Heathrow is that half the flights I've taken to there have been pointless connections. Since I live in the north, to take the train to Heathrow I have to go first to Kings Cross & then onto the tube. If my train is late I would lose my flight so the only sensible way to get to Heathrow is to fly in, fly out.

What we need is a trainline, not from Kings Cross, but from Scotland, Newc, York, Manc, Brum & the West Country direct to Heathrow, tickets sold on the same basis as flights - if you miss your connection due to a delay you will be put on the next available flight & trains running all day & night so you can make those early morning flights or get home from those late night flights.

That & the tickets need to be priced at a sensible level.
"Mrs. Pench, you've won the car contest, would you like a triumph spitfire or 3000 in cash?" He smiled.
Mrs. Pench took the money. "What will you do with it all? Not that it's any of my business," he giggled.
"I think I'll become an alcoholic," said Betty.
