I've just started working at the Department for Work and Pensions. I'm going to be on Social Fund as a decision maker.
I'm quite lucky as it means I'm in a secure job (that is assuming that HM Government don't go bust..unlikely, but with all that debt....), and I think myself quite lucky at this time, when everyone else seems to be losing their jobs. My Dad works in HR at a factory, and is having to make redundancies left, right and centre. I think it's harder for him than he lets on, as all the time he's having to do this, he's worrying about his own job security
So, in answer to the question, I'd say that the only people 'doing well' at the moment, are people in the DWP, guaranteed a secure job, a) because of the employer; b) because of an ever-increasing work-load.
And maybe insolvency practitioners..?Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

DWP are taking on as my OH is in the process of applying for them. We reckon its becasue that sector is increasing due to there being more people out of work, and so more people on the social security books0

engineering firms are being hit hard , 2yrs ago my dh could pick and choose which firm he wanted to work for now the company he is with have made 50% of the workers redundant and the others are now on a 3 day week ,he has been looking for more work and there are just no engineering jobs being advertised anywhere near where we are ,he would quite happily take a job upto 100miles around but there are none.
i feel gutted for him he spent 5 yrs training for his job and has worked really hard for the last 20 yrs and now he is just feeling really useless .0 -
Hello, just jumped over from the Child Support & DFW boards.
I work in the newspaper publishing industry & this is being hit quite hard.
It was on a downward spiral anyway because of competition from new technologies such as internet & online news companies & this so called crunch seems to have hastened things.
There are strong rumours from various sources that our department (Distribution) is to be out-sourced to private contractors around April time.Donedoingdebt Lightbulb moment January 2000. Debt at highest approx £102,000. Debt now (October 2009 - absolutely fork all!!!)
