Bank error - seeking compensation

Why? Because you got the answer you were looking for and not the one you should have got?
Inactive - because hes hardly come hard done by has he? The charges have been refunded and everythings back to normal. Still ****ed? Move elsewhere. Did you not do exactly the same with HSBC? I don't see your trying to claim compensation because they changed their T&Cs.0 -

Yes of course he has been " hard done by " as you put it.
His bank have stopped his access to funds on the lead up to Christmas, have caused him undue stress, and above all have handled the matter very badly, of course he is entitled to some compensation for all of this mess, which was not of his making.0 -
Andy. Don't listen to the unhelpful twonks above. Sue the useless fools for everything you can get. Anyone who has any sympathy for Abbey is clearly not sane.0

Which all could have been sorted if he went to the branch and spoke to someone in England to an actual human.....
Could have been sorted in no time....
Stop funds upto Xmas.... thats why I have 2 current accounts, if one got stopped because of reasons such as a) suspected fraud b) general problem c) anything else which I cannot think of, I have that one to live by.
I would imagine most people here have 2 current accounts anyway, why can't the OP do the same? Stops becoming stressed like this.
If the OP is really annoyed by it, go sue the person who typed the number in wrong. I suspect the OP has never made a typing error in his life has he.....
--- storm ---
I don't like Abbey but that doesn't mean I am going to rage at the fact a typing error was made and try to claim compensation when all it caused was a little stress (which could have been avoided)0 -

You often here the old spent hours on the phone line and cost loads in phone calls, with a lot of phone companies offering free calls the chances are a lot wont have incurred any charge for the call!
People used to want an apology and the mistake put right asap. Now the first thought is how much money can i get out of it.
So, where do you draw the line?
If there was a national policy of no compensation (other obviously that putting right actual financial losses) then this would at least be consistant. However there is not so different individuals (on both sides) will judge each case on its mertits.
If, like me, you were self employed you may well take a harder line. This is for two reasons. Firstly time is more directly money and secondly, any mistake I make in my work comes directly out of my own pocket plus whatever I feel I need to do to keep the goodwill of my client.
Personally I take a far harder line with banks than with other organisations. Although it has not directly affected me, this is due to the disgraceful way they have imposed penalty charges on their clients.0 -

What world do you live in, where you quietly go through your life seemingly accepting anyone else's incompetence as 'just one of those things'.
It isn't just that a typo was made, but that their systems could allow such a typo to occur - what would stop a dodgy trader deliberately doing what happened to me? Surely if their systems are automated enough to charge fees after assurances that they wouldn't be charged, then they could come up with something to stop an amount way over the level of funds in the account and way over what the trader typed into his machine. In any case, why should i or any other bank customer have to suffer for their error. They didn't fix anything quickly, i have lost a considerable amount of money due to this.0 -

It could not have been " avoided ", if that is your idea of a " little stress " then it differs wildly to mine and most other peoples, I would guess.0 -
Why? Because you'd rather sit on your phone than go to a branch and sort it out there and then.
Fair enough I have sympathy in the fact it caused a nuisance, but not when all you did was phone up telephone banking! Everyone knows they're a load of crap! I have never understood why people use it unless they are on holiday or its really late at night and you need to cancel a card or something.
I didn't say you need a backup to everything in life, I said another current account. They're free and take 5minutes to open! How many pens do you have? I think most people have more than 1 in their house... I am sure as you are a person who never makes backups to anything I would love to see your computer die right now, only to you then go 'Oh, I wish I made backups'. Or do you make backups for that...?
Life isn't perfect. Doesn't mean you have to go claim compensation for the reasons you gave.It could not have been " avoided ", if that is your idea of a " little stress " then it differs wildly to mine and most other peoples, I would guess.
I meant the stress could have been avoided, not the actual situation.0 -

Sorry I don't agree, the OP contacted the bank via a recognised Abbey system, they did not put things right in a timely manner, that is inexcusable.
He is fully justified in some compensation in my book.
Why do some people think that lousy service is something that we just have to put up with in this country?0 -
Because its England? Its the norm...
I don't see you people (all those complaining) claiming compensation from Labour or TB for making mistakes
Yeh fair enough its a nuisance but its not like its caused massive amounts of danger.
Andy - how much are you looking to get?0
