  • I think everyone is allowed a moan sometimes. Listen to what they say arrange a treat night once a week/month/quarter whatever your budget dictates and let them choose whatever they want. The catch is they have to eat it or it stops. Explain why you want to cook for them and get them on side.

Mine just wish I would cook more often and stop leaving them to fend for themselves. They forage and manage some quite edible dishes.

I used a really sneaky way to get my 9yr old to eat more healthily. He is a veggie but would gladly eat pizza all the time and turned up his nose at side veggies. I tend to make a lot of chillis, pasta sauces etc from scratch. A little while ago I made him sit with me through 'you are what you eat' and 'Jamies school dinners' - then a few days later I told him that the 'authorities' were clamping down on kids that eat badly and sending them to food camps. Amazing - overnight started eating veggies no problem!

:rotfl: :rotfl: I think OH's mum would have been grateful of those programmes when he was growing up as apparently he wouldn't eat anything vaguely healthy. She's a bit annoyed that he eats most things now - including salads and courgettes. :D

Mum!!!!!!! :hello: Crikey, being reincarnated as Elvis is a neat trick! ;)

VickyA - I went through this with my boys particularly in Y4/5when they were taking HM Soups and HM cakes in their packed lunches. Food fads hadn't been too great a problem before that. But, at the first "You're mean!" I simply smiled and pointed out that, if I were *really* mean, I'd buy them Mc's and KFC and choccie biscuits, sugared milkshakes, burgers, greasy chips, silly branded "kiddy" yoghurts and a whole manner of other stuff; because if I really *were* a mean Mummy, I wouldn't care less about their health.
But, *because* I care and love them so very much, and I'd love them to still be around in 50yrs time and not suffering all kinds of illnesses as a result of poor food choices I give them healthier alternatives.

Now, when they leave home and if they *then* decide to stuff their faces with those things, that will be *their* choice. ;)

Yes of course they have treats like Mc's; yes they have treats such as crisps and sweeties and yes they do have Fish and Chips ... but they remain what they were intended for - as "treats" - not the main part of their diet.

I also made my 2 sit and watch Jamies school dinners, you are what you eat and a new one on channel 5, diet doctors. After that, they refused to eat processed food!!!! Once they saw what was in a chicken nugget, they decided they liked mine!!!!

My kids are on reasonably healthy diets. They cannot have sugar in their diet due to allergies/asthma/eczema etc. They eat what is put in front of them and they are happy to eat it. They've never really had junk food such as MacDonalds, KFC etc I won't buy it. When they do get a treat, banana milkshake (they can't have a lot of fruit either as the fructose in it cause their asthma to flare up) they are jumping for joy. They do get treats, forbidden foods etc but can only have small amounts and not very often as they suffer for it. I remember the first time I got them fish fingers, and I did potato wedges with it and some peas. They were grinning from ear to ear. Most of the meals we have have got to be made from scratch and they are happy to try most things.

Like a previous poster mentioned, I would state to your kids that OS cooking means that treats can be bought for them, days out etc saved for etc. Whereas buying convenience meals/foods etc means that the money that would have been saved is going on that instead. I'm sure that they will quickly change their tune when they realise that they will miss out on treats by not eating OS meals. If they don't change their tune then continue with the OS and they can just go hungry, and that's just the way the cookie crumbles.

I remember sitting down to meals that I hated when I was younger. My mum used to make everything from scratch and several times a week we used to eat with our cousins (which I thought was great) but only now do I realise that it was because mum had potatoes and auntie had onion and a couple of eggs.....they had to get together to make a meal.......

If we didn't eat what was on our plates we went hungry....but we didn't complain, there was literally nothing in the house to eat, no crisps, no biscuits, no cakes (only on a sunday if there was enough flour etc to make them with), there was tap water or nothing and we were rationed to an apple a day.....most of the veg was grown in the garden, as was the majority of the fruit.

I remember the lamb stew that went on the hob on the monday and stayed there until at least wednesday - being topped up each day with veg....I hated it but I soon learnt it was better than nothing.....

Sounds like I was bought up in the dark ages but it was the 70's, money was tight, food was expensive compared to todays prices and you just got on with it.

I've been in the same position with my own kids, they've refused to eat what I've put in front of them and it's heartbreaking to see it go to waste but it's taken about a year for them to both at least try everything. They've realised that we do mean business when we say - there's nothing else.

Just keep trying, they will eat it eventually - all the time they know they can push you to give them what they think they want, they will.

Try serving much smaller portions, if they like it and ask for more they'll remember next time that they had seconds......

Also if you eat at a table, get them to stay at the table until everyone else has finished, pay attention to those who are eating and chat to them about their day, the others will soon want that attention too.

If its any consolation Black-Saturn my family is the same. I think its a matter of a compromise cause ive tried starving them out and it aint worked. I think the key is to do it a little bit at a time and dont buy too many treat type foods (cause they wont eat what youve cooked, but will fill themselves with the rubbish).

My children are fed up with Old Style meals and me cooking everything from scratch. I've tried burgers, chicken nuggets, pizzas etc etc home made but they turn their noses up at it. I cant get them to eat anything from the slow cooker without them moaning about it all the way through. So tonight I've resorted to frozen fish fingers, frozen garlic bread, frozen chips and frozen onion rings. In the past I would have made all those myself but I'm fed up
    Awwww <hug>
