  • Joy of joys - I had breakfast in McDonalds this morning, the first time in about 3 years I think, god is that stuff awful or what, soggy bun, soggy sausage (???? Sausage my bum), possesed cheese, hash (strangely) brown dripping with oil and very very odd tasting coffee. Never again, I'm glad to be home and will have proper food later on today - I had forgotten just how bad processed food really is, a big up for OS from me.

The last MD's breakfast I had was over 7 years ago and you've bought it all back how totally terrible it was. Uggh

Now and again I succum to a big mac, then wonder why I do it. Becoming less and less often though, I think about 5 or 6 months ago now.

yes MATH, you are low down and dirty;)

today in the saver household where the kids have sweets and other cack after school, because Friday is 'treat day':)
DD wont do maccy d's as she says its evil

they see os as a treat though, because they get to eat things they make, get TONS of fruit, keep hens, and appreciate the times we spend in the kitchen cooking, rather than opening packaged food. They love to learn to make new things, and dd would rather do that than eat junk :)

  • A little Story,

Many moons ago when I still had all me faculties (and hair) I used to be in the Army and in the ration packs used to be this tinned stuff, it was hearing aid beige in colour and as tough as Chobam Armour, on the outside of the tin it said "Cheese Processed", this stuff was indestructable, wouldn't melt, was imposible to cut and didn't taste of cheese either - hence the name Cheese Possesed!

I think teaching my eldest the OS ways isn't going to be as hard as I thought! ... he's just wolfed down two bowls of HM soup and has also asked me to show him how to make the microwave steamed sponges so he doesn't need to buy Heinz tins again :T :j :D

There's hope for us yet! :rotfl:

my kids like most kids like the rubbishy foods ie mac donalds etc (so do i) but kids also love meals that are home made ie soup, lasagnes, sunday roasts with veggies etc... i have never ever forced it onto them they just appreciate it ages are from 8yrs up to 20yrs and my 9yr old son will always try anything even if it looks awful he will still have a taste:D

The comment about what our grandparents went through I do not understand.

Now: Overprocessed, chemical laden food with little nutrition and causing blood sugar spikes and hyper activity.

Then: Fresh produce full of vitamins, no colours, no chemicals.

I'm very lucky that my kids have had a healthy diet from birth and beg me to make stew and dumplings and love cabbage (they do - really) they also love Maccy D's but understand that this is a treat (yes I'm guilty of making junk a treat too:o ) I can understand that it would be much harder to steer a child away from a junk food diet if that is what they have been used to.

i think the reference to the grandparents may mean the wartime rationing which was horrible for them yes BUT i don't for one second think anyone on here is recommending we live like that. you're not depriving your children by not feeding them processed food at will, you're SAVING them!

you save them the cruel torment of the kids on the playground calling them lardar*e, fatty etc

you save them the low self esteem because they are too tired and/or overweight to wear the clothes that are in, play games and generally be welcomed into the crowd because kids are cruel to overweight kids or kids that can't participate in sports/games for whatever reason

you save them hardened arteries and a lifetime of health problems

you save them realising when they've grown up that their parents didn't take the time to teach them how to eat properly

it's not that we're saying we NEVER give our kids junk food, it's just a matter of not letting the kids get to the point where that's all they'll eat, believe me, most would only eat crap food if they could get away with it if that's what they have in the house all the time!

i'm not coming down on you, i can understand your concerns but it really is much kinder in the long run. it's hard as a parent as you don't want to seem like the bad guy but your kids will thank you for it in so many ways over the years even if it's not verbally
