If you cannot get access to the cistern, then neither can the plumber. You can look for the access for nothing, if you ask the plumber to look you will have to pay for the time he spends trying to gain access. Have asked at any of the neighbouring flats if you can look at their arrangements. This has to be a simple problem with the fixing of the shelf. The simple fact that there is a shelf there almost certainly means that it is covering a cistern.

Is it your own property or are you renting? If the latter, it would be for the LL to sort out.

    Unfortunately my own property!!!

Have you tried slicing round the edge of the 'shelf' with a stanley knife as suggested? Are you sure all the tiles or whatever is covering the surfaces are the originals from the time the flat was built or has someone possibly added a few more tiles or lifted and glued the shelf?

In terms of cleaning, you want some thick toilet descaler liquid that you leave on overnight and scrub with an old kitchen brush (gets into corners better than a loo brush) BEFORE flushing the next morning. If the scale is around or below the water line you want what I call toilet bombs - basically little fizzy tablets that you throw in and leave, again scrub before flushing a few hours later. I have managed to get an all male, student/ crusty house's toilet white again using this method!!

No outcome I am afraid - been too busy to sort dripping water out

But managed to get limescale off - got some Cillit bang and it was gone...but can see it has started building again due to trickling of water round the side :(

My ongoing saga here with the dripping water....

A guy from UU came round and said that my meter was constantly going round...sh*t were my words. So had a look inside toilet with plumber and seems that syphon is knackered....very stressed at moment cos I have now isolated the valve.

There was also some water leaking onto the floor which is more stress and I am off on hols on Monday and plumber cant get parts until next so I am !!!!!!red !!!

Hopefully I wont come back to a flooded apartment.

Anyone know how much it may cost in water charges with all water dripping into the bowl FOR MANY MONTHS !!!

Can't you turn it off at the stopc0ck where the mains enters the property?

Not helpful but ... surely no more than you have been paying, as its been dripping all along?

Check your buildings insurance as you may be covered for water meterage charges caused by leaks. I know MoreThan cover you for it as i've just moved my insurance to them (£80 quidco cashback!) and was reading their policy booklet.

Good point - only snag is that I changed my insurance companies a few weeks back - also this thing has been running for months and even though I could see the water overflowing into the bowl I did not do anything - only when I got a knock on door from uU did I bother - will that not make my claim void?

Just to give you forwarning. I had a dripping tap (more like a constant trickle), tried changing valve sets in the tap, but didn't cure it. I had to save and get some new taps. All of this (together with some procrastination on my part:D) took about 4 months. My next quarterly bill was turned out to be about £100 more than usual ( ),and I got a letter from Northumbrian water asking me to check for any leaks/dripping taps as they had noticed the large rise in my water usage!
