I am an existing customer with broadband with orange with limits on speed and usage and was paying £18.00 mth. I looked around and found a deal worth £17.99 with tascali for 8mb download speed and unlimited monthly usage and free weekend calls. When asking for the code to transfer from orange they advised that they would not only match the deal but better it and I got 8mb download speed with unlimited monthly usage and all free calls for £17.99. I think the advertised price is something like £28.99 month for the broadband max package so it saves to shop around and haggle and threaten to cancel:beer:0

hi,
i am currently on ntl phone and broadband but want to change. i am considering getting rid of my phone altogether. however, all these brill cheap broadband providers say i have to have a BT line. i know my house has one but i never connected it as i used ntl instead as soon as i moved in. how do i get cheap broadband?
cheers.

Yes, with ADSL you need a BT phone line (or at least one that is using the BT network).
Cable broadband is great because you don't need a phone line to use it, so you can dump the landline, also you get a decent speed, unlike ADSL where you may get up-to the speed on offer, but nearly all will never get close to the speed as they live too far away from the exchange.
TalkTalk broadband should be avoided at all costs, as it's next to useless, and you will spend 18 months regretting the day you joined them. TalkTalk requires you to have a BT phone line, and then they transfer the phone line over to TalkTalk, so you need to stay with BT for 3 months if a BT line has been used before in the home, whether by yourself or any previous owner or 12 months if the line has never been used.
As you have found out with lower cost broadband providers you need a BT line, so that is £11 per month extra you have to pay.
The best thing to do is call up NTL and tell them you aren't happy with the cost and state that you can get cheaper broadband elsewhere, they will often cut the cost to you.
Cable phone line has been a rip off for years, but the broadband is pretty good, if a little on the dear side now, but remember these other providers are offering cheap broadband because they are cutting corners, you will have caps, shaped traffic and other nightmares. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -
If you are a Sky customer, the cheapest Broadband is with Sky. Their 2 MB is free with 2 gb download limit, or their 8mb is £5.00 with a 40gb download limit. I don't know anyone who has tried it yet but would like to hear any comments from those who have as I am considering switching to Sky Broadband.IF THIS POST HAS BEEN HELPFUL - PLEASE CLICK ON THANKS :j0

Thats the problem with an ntl phone line, it severely cuts down your money saving options. We went back to a BT line about a year ago but kept our ntl broadband. We have certainly not missed the phone line and it has meant that we can also use all the cheap call providers like 1899 and 18185. We nearly got talked into keeping our ntl line when I told them we wanted to cancel it. We were offered 3 months free line rental if we stayed with ntl, but by that time BT had already given us an installation date so we left them anyway.
Yesterday I called ntl to say I was thinking of cancelling our Broadband and joining sky and they have reduced our broadband charges for the next 3 months from £17.99 to ££8.50 a month and will do the same again if I call them in December.IF THIS POST HAS BEEN HELPFUL - PLEASE CLICK ON THANKS :j0 -
Hi
I'm looking of changing from V21 to Pipex as their deal seems good at the moment. V21 want to charge me £30 for the MAC number - are they allowed to do this? It seems a bit of a rip off
cheers
