I have agreed to move to talkplustelecom yesterday. Is this wise?

I had an unsolicited phone call to change my business supplier. (usual bill is about £200.00 a quarter inc VAT plus £29.00 for unlimited broadband - both with BT) I have just come to the end of a 3 year contract with BT and have had to Dial 9 before any outgoing call. There is no internal phone system - just one line with 1 phone, the broadband split and a terminal for a credit card machine that is only used a couple of times a week.

Talk Plus are wanting £86.00 for a years advance line rental then saying calls will be a lot cheaper. They say that I will have Broadband for £14.99 per month. They will send a router and the real bait .... a mobile broadband dongle with an 8GB monthly limit.

I haven't received the paperwork yet and I have 7 days from yesterday as a cooling off period. Contract would be 24 months.

Any advise or alternatives if this isn't the best for me?

Is it wise signing up on the basis of an unsolicited call? What are the terms and conditions look like? How long has the company been established? Does it have a website? Is it a reseller of deals you could also find elsewhere?

It sounds too good to be true.

    Now what's that saying?
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. It claims to be a retailer of BT wholesale and that all service issues are still dealt with by BT. There is a website but I do subscribe to the too good to be true school of thought!

The terms and conditions are in the post to me and I did take the precaution of not having any bank details available/with me yesterday. I am an o2 PAYG customer but not sure if the deals with them apply to Business lines.

I always get suspicious when the website owner's telephone number is a mobile phone number.

"Minimum Period" the first 60 months of the Service after the 7 days cooling off period from point of sale with Talk Plus Telecom

That's all very nice for the first twelve months. Have you found out what the rental charges for months thirteen to sixty over the following four years will be?
20.2 If the customer wishes to completely terminate their contract with Talk Plus Telecom they must pay the early termination fee of £395 + VAT per line, the customer will also forfeit any service charges and line rentals paid in advance.
9.9.1 To achieve 50% discount on line rental a payment is required to cover the years line rental. After the first year, line rental reverts to the standard 15% discount.
15.1 Talk Plus Telecom can change the Conditions (including the charges) at any time.

15.3 Talk Plus Telecom guarantees the call rates will not rise during the minimum period or renewal period.
??? Which condition trumps the other?

Even worse when the contact's email address is a hotmail account!!

On the other hand though, there are a lot of these 'wholesale' companies about which are run by small numbers of people. I remember my old employer used one of these type of company. I think they are basically just a reseller - just like you tend to find with webhosts.
  • You should be covered by distance selling regs. However, this does not necessarily mean that they will keep their side of the bargain.

BT will write to show if there is an attempt to change over your service, so make sure you open your post as soon as it arrives.

I hope you get it sorted.

You could revert to BT basic business line rental and use www.18185.co.uk for cheaper calls.

I do use 18185, my only reservation is do I get charged when the person I am dialling is "engaged on another call".

All I have to do now is convince the children to dial 18185 !
