If NYC is your dream, you'll enjoy yourself if you are on your own...

Shopping in NYC is an experience in itself, In the larger department stores, Saks, Bloomingdales, and maybe Macy's at a push, the shop assistants are attentive, and especially at Saks (yes, it is more expensive), they can't do enough, passing you different clothes, checking stock room for a certain style in your size.. never once have I heard them say the "all the stock is on the shop floor" phrase that we seem to get across here..

If you do get on with most people, the bartender will be your friend. Be friendly, and you'll meet people, maybe avoid the times square area, and venture down bleeker street and Greenwich Village and Soho for a nicer relaxed atmosphere.

saying all this, hopefully things work out and your OH gets a visa, and can come with you...

after re reading past pages on this thread i came across a super report on the Beacon hotel by waxies dargle, (it seems just the ticket for us):D
still a bit concerned with the flight change though, has anyone flown to nyc this route before?

not flown UK-AMS-NYC, but no, you won't have to collect luggage, as it should be checked through to NYC.

hotspur84 - depends what you want.. i like NFT, which is a series of maps, and just basic info. I also have a moleskine which I can take notes in of where i've been, draw my own maps etc... these both are not that good for a first time visitor.

Time Out, Rough Guides, etc etc all do the trick, but it depends what you want the guide book to show you.

I liked the Brits guide out of the three ( I am a book fiend and purchased them all) It was the subway/bus guide in it that really sold me. Super easy to use and helped me no end.

I've got a bit of a problem I'm due to go to New York in 8 weeks time, My OH is going for his visa interview on friday morning as he has a criminal record, The problem is if they say no that he isn't allowed to come with me then I will have to go on my own. I am only 23 and I'm a girl, do you think I would be ok on my own or should I try to find a replacement?

    Steph xx

    Hi Steph,

Hopefully your OH will be able to go with you but if not, i'm sure you'll be fine! I'm a 22yo female and when i was in NY, my boyfriend wasn't feeling well on our last night. I still had a few things to get to take home that night so i was on my own for that last night and felt totally safe and fine. I'm usually scared of my own shadow but was fine walking about the dark streets of NY. Just follow common sense and stick to busier areas etc.

    Mortgage-free Glee!
Was just in town today and there was a queue out of the travel agents and around the first two corners so i thought it must be a great offer or something(could here people saying "New York""yes New York") but asking down the line they were all silent and wouldnt be any help so i had a few hours to spare i joined at the back and slowly made my way forward. I could see the people coming out of the TA with a piece of paper with numbers on and whooping and cheering after about nearly 2 hours i finally reached the desk to be asked by the Travel Agency.

    ARE YOU HERE AS STEPHBS

    REPLACEMENT TOO !!
